feeding straw

anyone feed straw? fat cob needs to diet. can they have barley straw? i'm finding it difficult to source oat straw.

Afaik barley straw is ok. It's all we can get up here so I use it for bedding and it gets picked at...not had any problems. I think it's wheat straw which isn't so good.

Yes I have fed oat straw in preference to mouldy very poor quality hay - they thrived and definitely helped with their weight - this was good doer cob types.

I used to feed barley straw a lot. Mine actually preferred it to oat.

I had to take my mare off barley straw bedding when she was eating it overnight. Turns out horses can get still get fat on straw if they eat their bed plus their hay rations.

I have started feeding my retired event pony Honeychop oat straw chaff as a partial hay replacement and it's been brilliant, I couldn't source oat straw so this was the alternative, she has definitely dropped weight.

Yes I use barley straw, mixed well with hay 50/50

started feeding the kids pony the e-feeds plain straw chop ad lib to supplement his sparse grass and soaked hay...............lost tons of weight, and is loads happier as he now feels full
