He has come in tonight with a wound above his back fetlock joint

Its only small but has bled..Its slightly swollen around it...cant tell if theres heat as he wont let me anywhere near him...have managed to spray a bit of iodine on it and thats about it....now my worry is *apart from the cut* he has'nt started his injection programme yet booked in for the end of the month...so what do I do?? I just feel worried that I will go up tomorrow to a ballooned leg or a tetanus infected foal

..also would he be better out in the snow keeping it clean or in his stable...just wont let me near it

sorry I'm rambling now..

when i first got V at 6months of age he hadnt started his vaccinations and then proceded to jump out the field and had a rather massive cut fairly near his hock the next day it was a bit puffy but nothing to serious and he never got tetanus or anything. try not to worry to much and see how it is in morning x

Thank you thats what I needed to hear...obviously not that your's hurt himself

...just typical he's due to start his..he did have a tet jab when he was born but don't know how long that lasts..

You get him jabbed for tetanus without delay! Never mind waiting til the end of the month

If you haven't examined the wound up close, how can you tell it's not a puncture wound and with those, no amount of bleeding will get the 'bugs' out.

I second what Brighteyes has said. YO didn't pay much attention to a tiny cut on his mare's hock and it got so badly infected he nearly lost her. She was literally on 3 legs for over a month and is still not out of the woods. Definitely get the vet in. Better safe than sorry.

Get tetanus anti-toxin into him right now! The vaccine gives some immunity but if he has got it in that puncture wound he needs DIFFERENT STUFF to stop it in its tracks.

Sorry for my OP I was going on with myself....It was never my intention to keep his appointment for the end of the month

it was more to the fact that I hoped he would be alright overnight!!! having not had his tet's...and to wether he should be in or out *stable with all sorts of bacteria or out in the snow keeping relatively clean

Sorry for any confusion
