feeling gutted :(

I don't think doctors understand the urge/need to ride. If you weren't bothered, then maybe you'd believe them, but horsey people need their fix! So you'll do whatever it takes to carry on doing what u love. And I believe that's half the battle won! But please do follow others advice on taking it easy in the early days and physio galore. This is a marathon, not a sprint!
 
Just an update for all you lovely lovely people that made me smile and kept my chin up for me at a really really horrible time!
I'm back riding!!! The consultants are astonished by the movement I've got back in my knee but I had an amazing physio who pushed and pushed me and after being told I would probably only get 90degree bend back if I worked for it...I now have 138! Thank you all so so much, the messages and replies with advice and well wishing really helped me so so much. Just the last operation to remove all the metal work next week now. eep!

That is really good news Take it carefully though.

I had a shoulder injury which meant my arm just flopped about! Physio said if I could to lift my arm up 45 degrees after intensive work of 3 months she would be really pleased. After 3 months I could lift my arm above my head and after 6 months circle, well sort of circle, it round. She was amazed.

I don't think doctors etc realise the determination people find in themselves when the goal is to return to a beloved sport.

However, never say never, stranger things have happened than a Doctor's prognosis being proved wrong.

Ditto this, take their advice re rest etc. Get yourself a good physio, NHS ones will see you once in 6 months, print out some exercises and be done with you. A proper physio will use a range of electrotherapy and stretching to work on reducing the swelling, restoring range of motion and work on increasing the supporting musculature. It won't be a gentle massage, it will be sore and take time, but push through and you'll be surprised what you can achieve.
 
I had all metal work removed except one screw that internal to the joint it's not bad at all verses all the original stuff .
You need to careful after until all the holes in your bones fill in I found that hard as I had little pain to hold be back .
Good luck with it all and I am so happy you are back on a horse .
 
Aw, lovely update. well done for all your hard work and determination and keep going with the Sports Physio. You might feel the benefit of other physic, chiropractors etc as your back may be out of sync with compensating for a bad knee.

Ive had all the metal work out now so just a bit more physio and we're done! :D Will never get full range of movement back and will probably have to have the knee replaced in the near(ish) future but for now we will be kicking on (even if it is a bit unevenly ;) ) Thank you all so much for your support, it's honestly been so lovely to read when things have looked bleak!

My NHS physio has been utterly amazing. She has seen me every single week without fail and pushed me to my absolute limit, she said she wouldnt stop until I was back showjumping. I have written to the head of the hospital and she'll be rewarded and noticed for how far she's got me and hopefully that'll be a tiny step in the right direction to stop this sort of sweeping generalisation of the nhs staff. Yes, some of them are awful, some of them have lost all motivation (they are literally snowed under with patients some of who can't even be bothered to help themselves) but so so many of them are absolute golden angels!
 
Sorry to hear about the lack of full movement :( you don't need full movement though just "enough".

I smashed he end of my clavicle 2 months ago and it's still "early days" and I've got very little movement in it, which I really need to get back or I lose my job. Start Physio on Monday so hoping for the best.

Really hope you continue to improve and can kick on as you said :) makes me feel more positive to hear people being positive.
