Evening all, some of you might know from my previous post but I have to retire my 5yo cob, it was 2 years today the first time I rode him and the 02/10/14 was the last ride I had on him. I am feeling so numb and sad:(

Thanks all, I love this pony to bits and want him to be happy. I can't afford to keep two so he can be a field ornament. It just seems so unfair being that he is only 5.

Am going through the same with my 7 year old. Retired due to behavioural issues we can't get to the bottom off. Also feeling extremely sad as I also can't afford another. Hugs to you, it sucks sometimes.

I'm so sorry to hear this. He is a lucky horse to have an owner who is willing to retire him as a field ornament. I feel sad for you that you will not be able to ride though. Maybe you could look for a share or offer to exercise someone else's horse?

I hope I do not sound callous or col but if at 5, he is retired with no hope of being ridden again and you cannot afford another while you have him, I was seriously consider PTS.

20+ years is a lot of money being spent on something you may well love a lot but will have minimal enjoyment out of.

My heart goes out to you.

Maybe if he is a nice chap you can find somewhere for him so he can have a job, a petting zoo/farm, as a companion, that way he can do something and you could have a riding horse.

However it is your choice, you are doing the best for him, if only all horses were so loved.

So sorry you've had to make this decision for such a young boy. I think I must have missed your update after the vet's visit. What did they diagnose?

**snap** ... sat here with a fractured spine in 2 places, so mine is now going to be a field ornament too .... Hugs to both you and OP as it sucks doesn`t it x

OP I am so sorry for you, that is an awful position to be in.

A horse can still be very enjoyable and offer lots of fun without riding. That doesn't have to be there only purpose.

Vet doesn't think he will be able to be ridden again. He has had intermittent lameness on hinds for the last 1 1/2 years and last week went to hospital, no lameness in hinds but lame on fore! X rays show a roughening of bone on pastern joints, right worse than left. Nerve block of coffin joint made him worse but regional nerve block he was 85% better.
I can't have him pts ,while he is happy mooching about I will keep him.
Thanks everyone.

Oh, so are they not entirely sure what it is that's actually causing the lameness or is it a degenerative bone condition? Just wondered if it was possible to medicate the joints at all or put him on a supplement to help? You never know, he could well prove the vet wrong in the end. I would be like you though and wouldn't be considering having him PTS unless he was actually struggling just in the field

Ouch... Was it a riding accident caused by his issues? Hope you heal quickly. It is heartbreaking really... I long to ride him but had is too u predictable.

I really feel for you ((( hugs ))) to you too!

It's rubbish . Like you, I can't pts whilst he looks well and happy in his non ridden life. I love him and I want to take care of him...just wish he felt the same about me lol!

I am so very sorry to read this, as you say its so young, but how lucky to have you still loving and looking after him, you have done what is best for him and put your own feeling to one side. Shame other people do not all think like this, I can only offer you virtual support and Hugs, but my heart goes out to you.

Totally agree, the fact she mentioned not being able to afford a second one to ride, and being upset she couldn't ride him again would imply that a ridden horse would be her first choice.

My boyfriends mum has a couple of oldies that are retired but they own the land so don't really cost much, also a foal that had a strange twisted leg issue, may or may not come right time will tell.

My point is by all means enjoy them as a pet if u can afford to, but if a ridden horse is what you want and can only afford one, the PTS or re homing as a companion holds no shame or guilt.

Putting feelings and finances to one side for around 20 years possibly more? Doesn't seem fair on the OP in my opinion.

Life's to short to not live and enjoy it.

Hi, vet is leaning towards a degenerative bone condition. Lameness up to now has been in hinds (more often lame than sound). He has been on various supplements for joints but nothing really helps. We are waiting on a second opinion but vet has told me not to expect a positive outcome. All I have done with him is hacking c. 40 mins poodling round the village mainly walk with a little bit of trotting a few times a week!

I understand what you are saying and I'm not judging you to be cold for saying it but I can live without riding and I'm happy for him to a field ornament for as long as he is comfortable. Obviously once he starts to struggle I would pts!

If not sound doing poodling round the village, is he sound and comfortable in the field?

They are stoic creatures and don't always show pain :-(

My gelding died last year, freak field accident and from me arriving to the vet and the company to take his body was 2hr 16 mins it totally broke my heart and to be told a 7k operation would result in a less then 10% chance of him being field sound tore me as I so wanted to give him that chance but I just knew what I did was right, he hated vets and he couldn't have bared a 12 month box rest as he was previously abused and claustrophobic.... I do get how u r feeling xx

He certainly seems so at the moment, I like to think I know him. If i start to doubt things then I know what has to be done.
