Did the vet listen to his heart? This all sounds very similar to how my old setter's last few weeks went, and it was actually congestive heart failure that was causing the wobbliness. I only cottoned on when he started coughing as well.
Did you lose your boy recently? If so, I’m really sorry, he was a heck of a character.

Yes, my old boy Pat, my first horse. He was in his 30s by now we think, and had lost a lot of condition - I'd already decided it wasn't fair put him through another winter, but he took the decision out of my hands, rather. He really WAS a character, sensitive, supremely clever, surprisingly agile, very brave, but mistreated and mistrustful and defensive. He tolerated me, and I hope I redeemed us as a human race to some extent. He had his last 15 years with me mostly as a field ornament, his previous life as a cattle horse in Uraguy left him too broken to push on with a working life. He suddenly declined one morning and let me approach him when he was lying down - massive red flag as this hadn't been allowed in 15 yrs. He was uncomfortable and possibly colicking, and just looked SO tired. My lovely vet dropped everything and came, and he was gone.

It really has been a bit rubbish lately :-(

I told my sister about your boy and she asked if you had thought of getting him a chiro appointment. Years ago now her old collieX was in a similar state, struggling to stand and very wobbly. She took her to a McTimoney chiropractor, they carried her in and she walked out. She needed follow ups every so often but lived to 17, still active.

I hadn't even thought of this (although he's booked for hydrotherapy Wed..I've been in 2 minds about this). I have just filled in a contact form for a localish McTimoney practitioner, thankyou. I'm not hopeful, but we'll give it a shot. Thank you EP.

Always worth a try and nothing to lose. My fingers will be crossed for you.

Just an update, and not a good one. He's been on steroids since Wed but we've seen no improvement - he's now really struggling to even get up, and is falling over on his back end, needing support to toilet. He's also become increasingly incontinent. The steroids are making him pant. He's booked for a McTimoney practitioner for Tue - but it will be cancelled because he's also booked for a provisional home visit PTS Mon pm. Our poor beautiful boy just looks so baffled that his legs aren't working. He's beside me now, tucking into a big chew while the other two are off on a walk. He had his last "walk" about a week ago when he could still wobble along without falling down. He's being spoiled rotten this weekend, and having a million cuddles, but unless we have a miracle this will be his last. It's so, so bloody hard.

So sorry he’s no better 😢. I hope he picks up over the weekend. If there’s no change on Monday then you have my deepest sympathy and I hope your lovely boy passes over peacefully ❤️😢

So sorry to read this update. When I had to do this recently I consoled myself with the thought that at least my girl didn’t have to get old. In years she might have been (17) and she was totally deaf, but in herself she was still young. Her passing was quicker, from being fine to the decision being made and I could have bought us more time, but I thought why? For her just to have to get old and weak? Looking back, I think she’d have approved, but it was heartbreaking and I still question myself sometimes, although less and less as time goes on. I do get to remember her as a full of life typical terrier and I’m grateful for that.

So very sorry. Having been here recently, it’s impossibly hard (or at least I found) to ‘keep up’ with the pace of which an old dog, who is naturally at the end (as opposed to terminal illness, injury etc), goes downhill/things change for.

Beautiful dog too.
