Not really sure what happened but I think it went something like this.......
Was cantering along and horse put his head down but not in a threatening to buck or bolt kind of way, really just felt like he was having a stretch?! I pulled to lift his head - probably a bad idea looking back and I should have used my legs/seat to push him forwards from the back - and I think he took that as me wanting him to stop. So he attempted to stop dead from a canter but momentum meant that he sort of consertinered (sp?) and then had to spin his back end round to keep his front end still....obviously I went flying to the ground!

I THINK that's what happened but of course he could just have been a naughty pony and decided to throw a semi bronc in? It definitely wasn't a buck, I know that for sure!

Feeling quite stiff in my shoulders this morning and have spent most of the night trying to work out what happened, why, what I did wrong, what I could have done to prevent it, etc, etc. Fortunately, I don't feel terrified at the thought of getting back on which is a good thing.

What mental process do you go through after a big fall??

Only take tramadol etc if prescribed! You can take ibuprofen with cocodamol. Make sure you take it regularly. Heat pads or ice. Don't over think it these things happen no point in dwelling on it. It would be surprising if you didn't hurt. It will get better x

I tend to just shrug it off. I've fallen off so many times over the past 48 years I almost dont even notice :o
Only time it even registeres is like the last time when I damaged a tendon in my shoulder which is still not right and restricts the type of horse I can ride atm. Stong pulling types need not apply :o

Thanks for replies everyone!
The Co-codamol hasn't even touched the sides. Doesn't help that I landed on the shoulder that was damaged the most when someone smashed their car into the back of mine several years ago!!
PaddyMonty - I really hope that one day I will be able to just brush it off!
TBF I feel more motivated to get doing some serious work now - I'm not really sure what happened last night but if it was excitability or naughtiness then work is the best answer I think. And if he was being super responsive and trying to stop for me then I need to work on my aids!
Usually after a fall I don't want to ride ever again so I am getting better!!

Amytriptaline is an anti-depressant not a painkiller!

It is an anti-depressant but I was given this to take with dihydracodeine as it can help control nerve pain. Saying that it didn't work for me but I know that this is prescribed for pain.
(Not that you should take anything without prescription) thats just being a drug user lol!

Just put it down to practice, hard to say what happened but with experience you get better at avoiding falls. And as paddy monty said you just shrug it off & carry on. Might be worth getting a good instructor to teach you how to fall too, how you land makes a massive difference to the damage you sustain. Get some heat rub or spray to put on it (easier than perching a hot water bottle).

You fell off, I wouldnt worry too much about why and a mental process etc, sometimes things just happen! When I first had the asbo I would fall off every time I rode him!! Forget about it, move on, and drug up!!! :D

I wouldn't worry too much about falling off or analysing it, these things happen, and go with your gut instinct, sounds like she was just being obedient for you:D

Go to your dr, sometimes a physio session will sort these things out, the best thing I find for really really sore backs is is Codeine, but your dr will prescribe this... and don't rule out good old Paracetamol, its very underated, it's a fantastic painkiller! Radox bath too :D

Both my mum and brother take amatriptilne for nerve pain and it works well for them......tramadol gave both my brother and grandma hallucinations (floating skulls:o)

I panic, then worry then try and shrug it off :o bit of a wimp with the whole falling off thingy.......

You sound as though your thought process is about right - getting back on and getting her down to some serious work.

Unless you have a witness to the event! - you've already analysed enough - she either had a naughty blip, or she was being very obedient and doing exactly what you asked, just a bit quicker than you anticipated. Your gut feeling is that she wasn't naughty, so that's it, analysis over :D

Hot baths, solpadine (codeine & paracetamol combo - the one with caffeine is a bit more effective) and ibruprofen. Keep moving gently and the stiffness should wear off in a day or two. Feeling sorry for yourself and getting lots of sympathy is great for one day only :D

Good luck!!

amytriptyline is an anti depressant as you say but is also commonly used as a painkiller depending on dosage. (when prescribed).as a by note, again depending on dosage, it can also be used to prevent bedwetting .

I've had a fall before that i have no idea how it happened. We were cantering along on a nice grassy track. The horse spooked (did a leap) left which i didn't anticipate, so saddle twisted to the right, i was hanging off the right side BUT i fell off on the left side???? I had my friend with me so i know that i didn't go underneath the horse. We still can't work out how i fell of to the left when i was hanging off the right side.
Hope you feel better soon :)

Well obviously it lashed it down as I was on my way to the yard!! :( fingers crossed it'll stay dry tomorrow & I can get back on! If he's too wet 2 tack up tomoz then I'll bring him in to dry off & then turn him out in a lightweight/rain sheet so will deffo be able to ride on Saturday!
