For all those who replied to my post a few weeks ago thank-you :), for those who didn't briefly my mare lost the plot out hacking was rearing vertically (sp) and scaring the bejesus out of me :(

WELL, had vet out following day spent and hour and a half with us!, did a thorough check in the stable then went out lunged her, fine no problems, followed with a flexion test again no problems, so it was put down to hormones and we started her on Regumate, it was also suggested that we scan her ovaries!!, (will hold back on all the stroppy mare jokes and how ironic comments I received :o)

I rode her yesterday (been on Regumate 2/3 weeks), soon as we got off the yard she started again :( got off and led her (lots of times) got round the hack but think I may have walked more than riding!.

Today was the day she was booked in for her scan, loaded her and off we went, talking about if there were cysts, treatment, key hole surgery etc. so I knew where I stood not a problem simple I thought, then we scanned NOTHING, healthy ovaries and uterus :) something to be proud of I'm sure ;), so vet suggested "let's x-ray her back, just to rule out everything while she is sedated", then it went down hill :(

4 or 5 x-rays later we are looking at Kissing Spine :( she was kept in there and then and will be operated on tomorrow afternoon, although it's not the operation we are all aware of!, our vets are carrying out a surgery that they say no one else is doing, a standing surgery, where they cut the ligaments in the affected area, I can't really explain how, it's only available here until a peer review this year, but the success rate I was told today is 95% :)

I would be lying if I said I wasn't worried but at least there is an explanation for her behaviour now, and fingers crossed all goes to plan, so please send lots of vibes for my lovely Tilly xxx

Oh blimey, well at least you have an explanation but I'm so sorry to hear this. I really hope the op is a success - never heard of it so be very interested to hear exactly what it involves? How long is the recovery likely to be and how long before they know if its worked? Got everything crossed for a positive outcome for you.

Big vibes to you and Tilly, I remember when you posted about her rearing and thinking how terrifying it must have been. Well done that vet for thinking of looking at her back, it must be a relief for you to know the cause now. She really was trying to tell you something wasn't she? (I don't mean to make you feel bad by saying that by the way..how could you have known?). I hope it all goes well! XX

Lots of vibes and big hugs. Thank goodness you listened to her and had her checked out. I hope it all goes well for you. :) x

So glad you found the problem. I retired my mare at 6 with KS as I didn't feel I could put her through the surgery with its months of rehab and only a low success rate.

I would be very interested to learn more about the surgery your mare is having - please keep us posted. Are there any websites about this treatment that you can point us towards?

Good luck to your mare.

Hugs for you both and at least you now know why she played up, good for you for taking time to find out her problem,it's a pity some other owners don't give their animals the same option instead of calling them nasty, naughty etc.

Absolutely everything crossed for you and the mare. It sounds like your vets are excellent and using the very latest medicine. Who are they?

Thank-you everyone for your comments and I will post tomorrow after she comes home :)

For those that have asked about the surgery I will add a link (I hope it works!) that our vets have about the surgery, am really hoping this works, it's about a 6 week programe (sp) to get her back to work with physio appointments as well, but that is also dependant on the horses fitness before the op.

Hope it works, big glass of wine to all who have already replied and any others who reply, I have a box of Rose wine (might help me sleep!) and the last of the easter eggs to offer :)

At least you have an answer to the problems you've been having. The surgery sounds a good idea, especially with a 95% success rate. Do keep us all updated on how you get on.
