So we just bought a new horse who arrived on Tuesday, however about a week and a half before then she cut herself on a fence, she had a flap of skin on her pastern along with a few scrapes there is also a bit of swelling and she is slightly lame (barely noticeable only after lunging for a while). yesterday the flap (was all dead skin) fell off in the paddock. she is fine with me touching it to put cream on.
We were thinking about getting the vet out but we don't want to if we don't have to as it is not cheap and we aren't sure if there is really anything they can do anyway. We have been putting an antiseptic ointment on twice a day which should be helping and were told by previous owners she was on bute and antibiotics for four days after the injury.

The wound on Tuesday

The Wound Today

Is there anything any of you can recommend? Is it urgent enough to require a vet?

Okay, i did kind of think that but some ointment from earlier had remained which are the white spots so wasn't sure if that was all.

My lot are always bashing themselves, but after a few days of Germolene application the wounds are clean and dry. If they still looked like that after two weeks I would definitely be wanting a vet to look at it.

okay sounds like vet is gonna be best. I forgot to mention we did actually speak to vet when we first got her and showed her some pictures and she basically said keep putting the ointment on andwe will need to cut the flap off, but will have another chat with her.

If you have already been in contact, send them the pictures and let them make the decision. Better safe than sorry.

Give the wound a chance by clipping all the crap off around it (use clippers or sharp scissors).
Wash thoroughly with diluted hibiscrub and some cotton gauze swabs (buy from the chemist only a few pounds, don't use cotton wool balls as it will leave fibres in the wound bed), the wound is very contaminated looking.
At this point I would be wanting to dry the wound up a bit and kill the bugs in it so would consider iodine spray or wound powder.
A short course of oral antibiotics might not go amiss.
Keep area clean and dry for a few days at least. I like to keep things open to the air to heal but you might need to bandage this to cover and stop the leg swelling if kept in due to mucky fields.

Ointment and creams are really not good as they stop wounds breathing. My thoughts are clean it up so that you actually get to the bottom of all the gunk etc and then take a picture to share with the vets. You may need antibiotics etc but not possible to tell At this stage.

Okay, so i just got back we ended up calling the vet (we got some bloods at the same time to check her selenium and magnesium levels). She basically said, it looks fine, not infected, swelling had gone so that was fine, she told us to put some blue inflammol gel which has a steroid to stop any more proud flesh, but if any more grows she may need to come cut it off, she said lameness is not from the cut but she has twinged something in her hind quarters so is restricting her movement a bit, she also said it could take a year to heal over completely and probably won't be pretty, but other than that nothing serious. (she also said it looked pretty good even though it has been two weeks)
