I have an extremely fussy horse! He would rather starve himself than eat what's available. He's currently on Baileys Endurance Mix, Spearmint outshine, lo-cal balancer and some other supplements. Been going back and forward with Baileys nutrionists to try and find ways to get him to eat the damn stuff. They suggested Fenugreek - which from what I can gather, is used in curries, and is an appetite stimulator. Managed to find some in Waitrose, had a whiff and blimey it's strong!

They've also suggested cinnamon and spearmint oil. If he likes these 3 things, my plan is to rotate them in his meals. AM: mint, PM: fenugreek, Dinner: cinnamon!

Has anyone used this, and if so, how much did you use, and did it work? And did your horse get "Ring of Fire"?!?!?!

Oh, and does anyone know where to buy spearmint oil from?

I use it on my super fussy would-rather-stare-at-food than eat it TB. I thought at 1st the smell would put him off but it doesn't,it really helps with his appetite. I use small blue scoop a day but not sure what size scoop is, poss 15ml size.

Many years ago, I read an article in H&H about a study that had been done to ascertain horses' favourite flavours. It found that fenugreek and banana were the top two most favoured. The one they liked the least was garlic.

The only caveat regarding fenugreek is that it shouldn't be fed to pregnant mares because it stimulates milk production...not a problem for your boy.

Ah that's interesting! He does like bananas and he hates garlic! Will bear that in mind! I'm also going to be trying cinnamon as another recommended smelly by the Baileys nutrionist!

I've used Fenugreek and fennel seeds in the past.

If you read the ingredients of VermX - it's basically curry powder with ceyenne pepper

My Tank (who prefers grass and haylage to any bucket feed) really loves cheapo curry powder from the supermarket.

I trialled the Solution Mash once and he went mad for it (it's got lots of fenugreek instead of molasses) whereas my Arab (who normally ate anything in a bucket) thought I was trying to kill him.

They like oranges, brasil nuts and grapes BTW ;)

For anyone that has an Indian/Asian food store in their vicinity, it's far cheaper to buy fenugreek powder from there than it is from any where online (even eBay). I get mine from one and its 50% cheaper.... Imagine any other herbs/ spices ie turmeric would be too.

I had thought about that... or buy it from wholesalers - but seeing as my horse only has potentially a few months to live, I don't want to buy a huge amount. I don't like curry myself so wouldn't even cook with it afterwards! :(
