Firstly, last week, Lady La La and I decided to play hobbit games. We rode into battle against Smaug, and a (rather small) army of Uruk-Hai before turning on each other...

Poor Smaug took a bit of a beating:

And the Uruk-Hai (OK I was improvising a bit)

It would be fair to say, Daemon wasn't phased but the orc invasion:

Only Dae would try to snog an orc!

Oh I tagged this with dressage, didn't I? OK:

I decided to round off the year by taking Fergus out for a cruise around an unaff medium, although my reasons for this aren't supported by a great deal of watertight logic. Largely I just thought it would be a laugh... Which, to be fair, it was!

He warmed up pretty happily and sweetly - despite the carnage of two rings worth of competitors in a very small space, in which apparently no standard rules apply :eek3:

^Shame about the judge's car in the background - I really like him in that one!

Typically I turned down the CL and forgot how to ride like a sensible human being - I seem to be attempting to ride "horizontal dressage". I think someone needs to scream "SIT UP" at me before I start :p

Hideous:

We did come out with a score the right side of 60, though I was more concerned with how he felt to be honest - there were some really encouraging moments. I felt like he stuck with me a lot more than he has in tests in the past, and most of the mistakes were my inability to multi-task (e.g. trailing Q's in HP - I was determinedly trying to keep shoulders fore and left the Qs to their own devices - which is definitely a learning experience for me).

I presume the judge was baffled by the insane amounts of bling going on:

Which means that we started the year by posting a sub 60 in a prelim, and ended it with a super 60 (in the latin sense) in a medium. Dressage is properly nuts!

Cracking photos, I too love the one with the judge's car in the background. His hindleg looks super :)

Thanks, every time I look at it I'm like "eeee, he's a real boy!" :p Not a hobbit pony ;)

Ditto RF - he looks fab and very active.

I love the hobbit fun too!!!

Thanks - well, I can't be serious all the time!

Crikey, how the devil did you manage that so neatly?! Thanks :D

How easy or difficult does he find the more advanced movements? The medium trots, shoulder-in, travers, and so on? He looks great in those pictures.

I ask because I sometimes toy with the idea of getting a Highland as my next horse (at the rate my horse is going, she might not need to be retired 'till 30, so we are not talking near future, hopefully) because they are adorable and pretty, and seem like sound, good-minded creatures. But when I've ridden them, the movement is really shuffley and earthbound, and I think, "Um, nevermind." Feels very unathletic compared to my Shire-cross. Dunno... maybe I've just sat on the wrong ones, from a dressage point of view.

Interesting question.

I'd say he finds lateral work and collection extremely easy. Mediums, less so, but he is capable. He's not naturally a very "forward thinking" horse, but he is capable of moving well, relative to his conformation and type. This is one of my instructors giving him in a wee lesson in manners and respecting the leg:

Dae, on the other hand is completely the opposite (conformationally and to ride) - he's longer and more open so he finds medium trot devilishly easy and collection will I suspect be more challenging - so there are definitely different types!

I don't know how much of it was me getting very lucky with Fergs, or if it's a training thing - or indeed if he'd still be shuffly by your standards. I can show you photos of him as a 4 / 5 y/old and I don't think he's any different in his way of going to most highlands - just that many of them never seem to progress beyond it :p

You'd be welcome to have a sit on him if you ever find yourself in these parts and see what you think.

He looks quite different as a youngster. The recent pics are much more athletic and uphill-looking! The Highlands I have ridden (only three) all felt very on the forehand and like they would struggle to lift the shoulders, and as there was no flexibility in the gait, they would not find lateral movement easy. One was so earthbound that I asked for trot, felt the horse doing a weird side to side motion, and I asked the owner, "What is she doing?" "She's trotting!" said the owner.

As with anything, there must be some variation within the breed, from athletic to not.

If I am ever around East Anglia, I may take you up on that, LOL.

love them!

Please, please do it! (and post pics :p ) It'll be an excellent spook-busting exercise if nothing else!

I actually might try it - I'm working on getting my boy a bit more manoeuvrable at the moment and this would be a fun way of continuing the training and getting him a bit more off the leg.

Oh he looks so  cute and smart!!!!!!

Love him in his bloooooo!!!!

Well done you and the best bit for me is the LOTR themed fun. Love!

well done! that is a result I would say.

Oh I would say the orc is probably afraid of Daemon instead! :D

Thanks - we were the only ones doing a medium and we beat people doing easier tests on "real" horses. This doesn't happen often so I celebrate it fully ;)

If the orc had any brains it would be VERY afraid!

Yep, I think most owners don't ask much of them / don't take their training very seriously. Not helped that they're often obese :eek3: Fergus has certainly developed dramatically over the last couple of years - but he's had someone doing lateral work in hand / on him / asking for collection / mediums / generally pushing his education forwards all his life. I'm not saying I've always done it very well (and a year ago, dressage was still on the back seat to my unrealistic desire to event him) but neither has he just been hacked / plodded around. I've seen that sort of movement and I don't care for it either!

Within the breed there are definitely different types - deer ponies tend to be more boxy, ground bound and chunky than the riding ponies. And then there's DryRot's youngstock (like Dae) who come out positively sporty!

Ridiculously I can't find a decent stood up photo of him, but this probably gives you an idea of what he's like in terms of sportiness:

This is him within a few weeks of being worked as a 4 year old (backed / ridden away briefly at 3). He's not what I'd call shuffly or ground bound even then!

love them!

You absolutely must. No question!

Absolutely. It's great for reminding you to ride from legs / seat as either one handed or no hands (if you're doing a Legolas impression like I tend to!) and makes a nice change from just dressaging around :p

He does suit his Equissentials tat rather :p And he is rather adorable ;) LOTR is always the bestest bit of anything. Dressage is amusing, but charging around killing orcs will always win for me! :D

One day I'll do it wearing Hobbit slippers and a cloak  And throw in some archery just because that's how we roll...

Is Fergus also from Dry Rot's stud?

I suppose if I ever do want a Highland, Dry Rot is the man to ask!

Yes, but D bought him at foot with his dam (Glentrowan Belina) who's still throwing lovely foals up there... Yes, it is possible to buy a Fergie half-sibling :p (lol)

I certainly keep an eye on his youngstock as I'd like one half sibling to both F&D next time!

right..............look forward to NMT and I failing at any killing and just farting round hopelessly laughing!

Haha, now this I have to see :D
