Morton's neuroma is the latest diagnosis of my ongoing foot problem, made worse when I ride. I have yet another appoinment with my slimy podiatrist next week, to discuss it further, but was wondering if anyone here has any recommendations for better footwear?

Apparently narrow shoes can set it off (not me, I don't wear girly shoes) and over-pronation. Well, I've had custom made orthotics for 8 months, now and they haven't worked! Next step (I'm assuming) is metatarsal pads being added to them or cut my foot off.

My jodphur boots are quite bad for it I've now realised (I'm wearing them today, with regular orthotics, as my custom ones move around too much - they're like cuttle fish!).

So any ideas? Is it home surgery for me? Bareback riding (or no stirrups, in which case I'll look even more stupid on my 12hh pony) or shall I visit hyperdrug and spend the rest of my life high on analgesics?

Yes a long time ago I had in both feet and when it clicks its blooming painful isnt it....!
You need to be referred to an orthopaedic surgeon and they can take you in as a day case to have it surgically cut out. You may experience numbness in the toes as they obviousl cut the nerve. I had one done but it was so painful post op I am such a baby that I never went back to have the other done! They do cut through the pad in your underfoot about 1.5" and I was in husbands flip flops for a couple of weeks...It did heal up fine though and my toes sensitivity did return. I had the right one done first as it was the bad one. It did sort it out though.

Your podiatrist cant sort this out for you. Get your GP to refer.

So if I understand this correctly - forefoot pain is your problem, as in the front of your feet, so balancing on the ball of your foot is uncomfortable

In which case you could give your front a rest and use K'vall stirrups, which distributes pressure along your entire foot, so you can use your heels to balance and keep pressure from the front

Other than that i would suggest trying on some more boots, as I don't think traditional style jodphur boots offer much support. Have you tried ones with a steel shank?

Dont know about your condition.
Have you tried the stirrups that the endurance riders use ?They are wider than usual and made of plastic,I think??

The pain is at the front, in between the third and fourth toes/metatarsals. I understand that the podiatrist can refer to a surgeon (hence me going there, rather than GP, as I'm an ongoing case).

Haven't tried steel shank boots or the K'vall stirrups. Will go off for a looksee now!! Thanks. :)

Just to recommend some steal shanked boots, I've had my mountain horse lace up short boots for 8 years now and they're still going strong (slight cracks at the crease but I do not look after my boots and they've probably never seen leather treatment since they left the factory!)

Give great support underneath the foot and very comfortable.

Yes, very painful with narrow boots, will take a photo of the insoles my doctor gave me which cures it, the hospital will fit you with some, if you have it removed sugically it can grow back. I suffer when riding for a long time, endurance stirrups do help
