The people that have bought Bertie had previously put a deposit down on a yearling colt, they paid to have it gelded whilst still with the old owners. The Friday before they were due to pick it up it got kicked really bad and apparently went permanently lame

They put a deposit down on Bertie 2 weeks ago, they aren't having him until mid July as they are abroad for a month. They paid to have him gelded 3 days after they agreed to have him.
They are going to square up with me with his rent and feed etc when they get back.

On Sunday he had a little cut no bigger than a 5 pence piece. I cleaned it up and he was sound as a pound. It wasn't bothering him. He as playing with Bear as normal.

OH went to feed them yesterday and said he was a little sore on it, I didn't really think anything of it.
This morning the old boy who owns the fields rang me and said Bertie is hopping lame, Bear was chasing him round which is unusual for Bear, I have moved Bear out and put Buddie in with him instead (he's in his element in grass)!!!

I was at my mum's about 10 min drive away so she took me up there, this is what its looking like

This is a video, if you carry on through the pics of Buddie theres stills of the swelling and cut.

I phoned the ladies vets but they couldn't do anything as I didnt know their sir name, but then I remembered that the 1st woman that initially came to see Bertie told them about him, so I phoned her and she said she will come up tomorrow and have a look before I get the vets out. I didn't want to txt or phone the lady as she's on holiday and didn't want to put a downer on it as she'd be gutted thinking its da ja vu!
Im going to poulstice it in the morning and hope that it all goes OK.

Can I have some hugs and good old HHO vibes please!

Good Lord. How deep is the open wound and is either of the other two wounds on his knee a puncture wound?

Is it on his knee?? And puncture wound like? Is there a clear greasy type fluid coming out?
If so Id get vet out ASAP, dont want to worry you but puncture type wounds over any joints are dodgy areas, regardless of how bad they look.
Fingers crossed hes just tweaked it.

ETS - TBH I would get vet out regardless.

Yeah its his knee, the other 1 was a graze, theres nothing coming out ATM.

Do I tell the lady that has bought him when I get the vet out? I really dont want to panic her. Poor woman, she must be jinxed.

just let it all go with "the flow"...

i sold a "colt" to a HHO member...took a deposit had him gelded..which went tits up big time....i have the photos if you'd like to see them..assuming the HHO member wouldnt mind!?...
i nursed him through it..it was seriously life or death..for a few days..

she was kept up to date..and fully understood if he didnt make it...

what i'm trying to say is..i think you should inform the purchaser of what has happened...

ETS........just bloody realised...DOH....what i've written is a waste of time as i talk and i quote "a load of crap" and i'm on IU...

hey ho, sh1t happens to the best of us................

I'm worrying about this for you, Sophie. I think you need to contact the vet asap and also the potential new owner as well, especially if you are thinking she will pay for the vet treatment.

Is there a puncture wound?
Im not sure about telling her, but I think it would be best to get the Vet asap.
Maybe wait to see what the vets says, or get the other women and see what she thinks about telling her.

The knee looks very nasty and I would not take a risk on leaving it another day without veterinary treatment. It's too close to the joint to ignore.

Is he up to date with tetanus at least? Have you given him any antibiotics and bute?

Its not deep, its just like a bad graze if that makes any sense.

Why does it always happen to me!!!
I feel so bad! I bet if I wasn't selling him this would never of happened!

I think that the horse needs to see a vet urgently - and then you should inform the prospective new owner of the outcome.
That looks like a serious injury to me, and one which oughtn't to be left without vet treatment.
Hope he recovers.

He's due for his next tet in the next week or two. I didn't give him any bute as I thought it would mask the problem if I get the vet out.
Jesterfaerie I wasn't going to poulstice it for 'just in case'.

Dont feel bad, that horses Im afraid.
Anything over a joint worries me to be honest, the most insignificant cuts can very extremely serious. Did you ee that article in H&H this week about cuts? There was a cut very similar to your boys and it had penetrated the joint capsule. Sorry if that worries you, but that why people are wanting you to get the vet asap.
JM07 said to keep the owner fully in the loop, I know you have her on IU but its good advice. That way the owners have nothing to come back at you with.

Your pony is 8/10 lame- give it some bute!! It will take the swelling down but trust me, it aint gonna get rid of it all before the vet sees it(!)
Pony needs antibiotics asap and a proper expert eye. If there's a chance it has reached the joint you're looking at a poor prognosis if not seen to asap.

If he were mine he'd be cold hosed 4x a day and be on 2 bute/ 1 sachet of antibs.

Can I see the pics please!
I know her sir name now so I'll phone in the morning and see when they can come out.

Pony is still technically yours, he got kicked whilst in your care- get your own vet!! If I was the potential purchaser I wouldnt pay for veterinary treatment whilst he is still your pony

I agree, a vet really needs to look at that. You can't be too careful with an injury that is so close to the joint.

thats what i did with ************ pony when he was with me....

i got the vet back out he received £ xxx's of care...and recovered..

Yeah sorry but get the vet out, its still your pony so forget quibbling with people and get him sorted. Surely you cant just get a vet out under someone elses name? If you can I might try that for all my vets bills so I can shirk them the same way!!!!

Before she went away she sorted out having him gelded with her vet, registered him with them and under her name.
They know the score, when I rang she said she knew who I was but couldn't bring up the details etc as I didn't know the sir name.
Im not quibbling what so ever, just feel really bad for the woman! She already got heartbroken once before over the same kind of thing.

So she hasnt paid you the balance for him, yet he is registered with her vet, even though she doesnt own him...how very oddly things are done down your way,I certainly wouldnt be registering any horse unless it was actually mine...

Sophie, your pony really should have seen a vet today. It sounds like it will see a vet tomorrow, lets hope thats not too late.

The pony was registered with her vets for the gelding but she has no responsibility over any other veterinary costs incurred because it doesnt sound like there was an agreement to that effect. Therefore the vet should come out in your name. Asap....

I spose she trusts me, Im not a dodgy person, honest!
I sound so pathetic, Ive never sold a horse before!
I wish they had taken him before they went away but they didnt want to take him entire.

Agreed, Boss...i carried the extras for the colt that was bought by a HHO member....

that pony needs Veterinary help ASAP...

Surely you have a vet for your other horses?? Why not get them out to the horse? Don't you have some responsibility towards this horse who is obviously in pain and needs urgent treatment?
crazy.gif

That is how Im feeling, I mean as far as Im concerned the horse is MY responsibility until the balance is paid, and even then if my lovely horse hurt itself,no matter if money had changed hands, Id sort out what needed to be done and worry about who's paying later..
