Hi all, just a quick question.

Horse in question needs to put on condition (horse belongs to a friend who has recently bought her, and needs to gain weight as a bit poor, all health checks, teeth fine etc, all worming clear etc)

Anyway we were talking about readymash extra and I said i'd used it before, but she commented it had lots of cereals and she would need to feed 3 or 4 scoops a day, split over 3 feeds, and thought this was too much grain. From memory I think there is barley, maize and oats in it?

She mentioned fibre beet (same company who make speedi beet). Would this be good for adding condition? Has anyone used it for weight gain?

Horse also is having 2mugs micronised linseed and a scoop of veteran chaff.

Would fibre beet add condition? sorry for long winded question! thanks.

Can't comment on fibre beet but i had excellent results with readymash extra. I fed one scoop per day between 2 feeds for a seriously underweight TB. Eight weeks later she was unrecognisable as the same horse. But it isn't something I would feed now, as I agree with your friend - it is very high in starch. She was also on excellent grazing at this time, so that in itself made a difference.
If I had the same situation now, I would feed Pure Easy by Pure Feeds..... fabulous stuff! :)

Hi hollyhocks, thanks for your reply. You introduced me to readymash extra, last year i think, and I think its wonderful stuff. Thanks very much.

I'll have a look at the pure feed website too.
thanks again.

Oh I forgot about that! It's fantastic stuff the Readymash, but having gained more knowledge since then, I still think it's wonderful for the initial weight gain, but mine got so fat on it I had to take her off it! I don't think the starch, long term is such a brilliant idea now. But I still maintain that my horse never looked better than she did on the Readymash!

I like speedi beet myself, but I thought there was added alfalfa in fibre beet? I might well be wrong though, i thought fibre beet was a bit more conditioning than speedi beet? Am happy to be corrected! lol

Basically, friend is looking for the most conditioning feedstuff that isn't grain based. I think the linseed will do the trick, but she wants a 'feed' as well. So, i thought of fibre beet.

What are your thoughts on speedi beet?

Speedibeet is a great feed as well - another of my preferred feeds - if only my horses would eat it! It's a great low sugar, no starch feed but fantastically high in fibre. It's a really good feed for hoof health due to the low sugar/starch combination.

Thanks Holly! Our boy has been on mollychop veteran plus supplements as a token feed. Now that winter is looming we have introduced one small cup of dry speedibeet per day - my gawd it turns into half a bucket of feed!! Thankfully the big man likes it!
