We have one of these - also a Jack Russell cross. The Field Spaniel is now eleven and in the best of health apart from slowing up a bit. The vet says their life span is 13/14 years though - which made me realise we need to start thinking about a baby to introduce.

We adore our FS. He is a delightful personality - very biddable and loving and we want a clone!

Went to Crufts on Thursday. The number of entries were pitiful (as the breed is endangered) and there appeared to be two 'designs' - one with a lovely labrador type of head (like ours) and the other (apparently more modern) with a head like a setter. Totally inappropriate for a working dog I would have though as they must carry pheasant and need to be strong with a gentle mouth.

Anyway -- we talked to the lady on the FS stand who told us there was a very long wait for a puppy - about 18 months. They are very hard to come by. We should start getting on a waiting list now I suppose. Anyone know a good reputable breeder preferable North England or South Scotland?

There is someone near Hartlepool that breeds Field Spaniels - I have encountered her on Seaton Carew beach with what must have been about 20 free running dogs! I'm not sure of her details but my mum will know so I can ask her and PM her if thats any use to you - not sure which part of the country you are in.

Please - we are in Northumberland. I think there might be a breeder in Gateshead area who uses the prefix Jordiland. Ever heard of him? No accredited breeders on Kennel Club site!

Well mum wasn't a lot of help - yes shes knows the woman, and yes she would recognise her and speak to her at a show, but can't remember her name and all she could tell me is she lives in Billingham - not a lot of help I'm afraid.
The only thing I would think is that given the number of dogs she has she must be an extremely good client of some vet either in Billingham or Hartlepool so it might be worth ringing around local vets and asking if they can recommend anyone - if she's a good client somewhere, they might be able to help you.
I think you might be right about there being someone in Gateshead too - I don't know them personally but someone at work thinks they work field spaniels in Lambton Estate near Chester-le-Street so we might be able to track you a number down from there. I will PM you when I know anything.

Oh thank you very mcuh. I am still unsure whether my chap is a Field Spaniel or a Working Cockers - he has three FTCH and one FTW in his grandparents breeding and is bigger than the show type - he also looked like some of the Fields at Crufts but I emailed Fellstead Gundogs giving them his pedigree and they replied that they thought he was a Working Cocker. Umm - all very complicated - I just want another one exactly the same!! Thanks for all your help

Mum has remembered lady's name. Must of been having a senior moment, bless her.
