I say finally as up until now I haven't had a project on the go since last August. Usually I sell one and then reinvest a little in to another straight away but for one reason or another I didn't last year. Clearly I subconciousnessly knew the winter was going to be dire! Moving on, this is Bracken. She is out of the same dam as the forest pony I event although is 2 years older (9) and has lived her entire life as a feral forest pony and as such is completely unhandled:eek:

I was saying to her owner a little while ago that I wanted another project and so we decided that as she hasn't had any foals whilst she's been out she may as well come in and do some work! Of course this meant we had to catch her first (there's more about that on my blog). The short version is she is now in a stable munching away on hay blissfully unaware that tomorrow will be the very start of what I hope will be a sucessful ridden career. The aim is to have her under saddle and competing at the breed show in August though of course we will go at her pace and will take everything as slowly as necessary. Can't wait to have a little session with her tomorrow!

...helps if I add the photo. This was taken last week when she was still out on the forest.

She looks like she has come through the winter well.
There's a few around which are looking very poorly at the moment so that's a good sign.
And she's a lovely colour.

Brave though taking on one who has been feral for so long, good luck.:)
Any reason why she hasn't had a foal?
Last year I heard they only had 10 stallions out over the whole forest and only for 2 weeks?
It's how I got my mare as the breeder was cutting down his herd numbers.

She always does well over winter, though recently we had been taking hay out to her as the shoots still haven't come though yet. Though we end up feeding everbody else's ponies too! I suspect she hasn't had a foal partly because as you said they have dramatically reduced the amount of stallions out (we didn't have one in her haunt at all last year) and because she's a bit of a loner and I suspect she doesn't make it very easy for the boys ;) Plenty of other 'loose women' out there who don't require much chasing!

This is where I pretened to know about forest breeding ;) :p :o I'll look him up on google :) I think i've heard of him so hopefuly something should come up :) I tried to search for Herbies dad but nothing ever comes up :(

Oh and make shore you keep us updated on how you are getting on with her and don't forget to take lots of pics. I love chestnut mares If she goes missing (or sudenly turns into a short fat roan forester, It wasn't me OK ;) )

Will be lots about him on the net, he was champion stallion at the breed show a couple years back.
Who is Herbie's sire?
I love ginger foresters, she'll be the 5th one I've produced if it all goes to plan!

Herbies dad is stuartmoor arctic fox (think that prefix is right I'm at my mum and dads so not got his passport with me) I've googled him but can't find anything. (He was/is a strawbery roan.)

I found lots of photos of your ones sire. Lovely looking pony. :)

Merryn is by Burley Branston. I don't have much trouble finding him and he only lives up the road anyway. Keep thinking about asking if I can visit him would be great to meet him. :D

cally6008 thankyou very intresting. Herbie has 2 full sisters :D and loads of half brothers and sisters :)

Sorry for the little hijack Charem :o
