Finally I'm a horse ownder! Anyone else with an American Saddlebred?

I've just figured this one out myself! Make sure your pics are saved to your computer or desk top etc and go to imageshack.com, you can upload each pic and then copy the URL to post on message boards and it works, if I can do it anyone can. Bonus you dont need to spend ages registering either!

Okay so here are mine taken recently, 22 month filly, 14.2/3hh, red and white pinto.

Lovely Frankie! Would you say your Saddler is an allrounder, what do you find he/she excels at and enjoys most?

I got there in the end, not sure I did it correctly.....
Your girl looks like a sweetie and looks like she's still got a way to grow - just love them!

Lovely Frankie! Would you say your Saddler is an allrounder, what do you find he/she excels at and enjoys most?

Her name is Happy and she hasn't done a great deal of anything, she was initially trained in saddleseat, which is something I am NOT interesed in. Since I've had her I've been taking things very slowly, hacking out, getting use to traffic, trips to the beach and Exmoor - she is always kean and willing. Recently I've had a few lessons which have been great and I'd like to jump her - eventually! She is very sweet natured and loyal, one of the biggest things about her nature is that she is incredibly observant - if anything is moved or changed in our barn or fields, she notices immediately, this also means she is very nosey out hacking!

Oh yes my girl doesn't miss a trick either and notices the smallest changes around her!

Is you girl patient and happy to work in the school or does she get fresh, would you say she is high energy? Will be interesting to see how my girl changes as she matures, when I first bought her she looked like a wild thing snorting and rearing in her pen, bursting with pent up energy! Now she has the turnout and Consistant handling she needs she's turning out to be a real gem. I'm working my way through Kelly marks perfect manners book. She's a star to lead as taught her to give to pressure v early on.

I love how highly tuned and trainable she is, once I've taught her something she only needs the subtlest of signals to get a response.

Wolf just absolutely laps it up. It's a bit of a double edge sword because he will file things away in his 'fings wot Wolfie has learned' file for later reference and that can include things that you've taught him by accident. My friend taught him the 'zip game' when he was a weanling, and before I could say 'noooooo don't show him that....' it was too late, he'd learnt it.

People keep telling me that Wolf has a right little pop on him, but whether that's the saddler side or the welsh side I don't know - his welsh side contains several good jumpers.

Footprint - I have only just seen your pm because font go on here much. My arab x saddlebred was definitely an alrounder and could turn her hoof to anything. My purebred filly is broken in walk and trot and hoping to do first ridden class at saddlebred show at moreton morrell at end of may. You should bring your filly. It's a lovely show and you will meet lots of saddlebred, Morgan and Iberian horses there. It's the UK-USA website

Show is Sunday 26 May. There are classes for full and partbred saddlebreds. Daisy looks lovely. What was her sire's name? If he's dilute he is probably related to my mare through Goldmount Bourbon Genius. Enjoy her. She will be the most comfortable ride ever :)

Esther - Wolf is looking great. You must bring him to the show on 26th may as well. No one celebrates their partbred saddlebreds enough. Very sad that the breed doesn't get the recognition as a performance horse that it deserves

She seems to be getting better and better in the school - always spooky at first and She will rack if worried but after about 5 mins she's ok. So initially high energy then when she relaxes she can be quite lazy!
When I first got her she behaved and same as you've described yours did, used to rear up constantly in her stable etc and I can remember thinking "oh ***** what have i done!". I turned her out with our older mare and slowly she relaxed and started enjoying life. She would definitely rather be out (whatever the weather) than stabled. I am also a fan of monty Roberts, just love their approach to training. Look forward to hearing more about your girl and may be some more pics.....

Hi Saddlebred - Her sire is Shine on Harvey Moon.

Daisy's done alot of growing since I last posted.

I'd be tempted to go to that show but I don't have the transport, I will aim to do something with her next year though. I'm hoping to just get her out and about this summer at a local show but not enter anything just for the experience.

Huge progress in past few months, no rearing in hand, really calmed down, although she's not even 2 yet. At the most she'll do a half spin spook but that's fine. Of course the 24/7 turnout helps!

I'm terrible with remembering my passwords hence another username lol, incase anyone's confused, but auto signs me in on my iPhone on this username.

Frankie-I'm doing the Kelly marks foundation course in a few months so I can get on long lining with confidence next spring and I'm very keen to learn about loading also, should be v beneficial!

Lucky you bet you can't wait. Lovely photos your mare is looking great. May be we should all try and meet up at the ASHA show next year (with or without a horse) be interesting to go, long way from Devon tho......

There's a show nr Canterbury, Kent near me in August, next August would be a good goal to set. I've never done any shows before so will be good experience for me with or without ponio!

Saddlebred - unfortunately it clashes with Hambleton Show which we are hoping (not planning) to maybe take the baby arab to :(

Wolf is being a very good boy and we've had a big milestone this weekend:

I'm hoping to go to the one in Kent this August without fillio just to get a feel for it. I'm quite near the south of England show ground so that's an option to.

Lovely pictures of Wolf. He is so unusual looking. You must get him out and about Esther. We need to get these Saddlebreds recognised as the performance horses they are.

Frankie - I met Happy at an Open Day at Monnington Morgans. She was only 3 or 4 and Georgia Bulmer was riding her. She was very sweet natured and didnt bat an eyelid with all the horses whizzing around her and various horse drawn carriages because we did a parade through the apple orchard.

Georgeygal. You have got Saddlebreds near you in Kent because I bought Diva (Stonewalls Bourbon Rose) from there!! My horses are all probably related to yours all through Goldmount Bourbon Genius who was one of the first saddlebreds imported into the UK in 1966. If you search for Robin Neal you will see that his Stonewalls stud have had a number of Saddlebreds and they are still breeding on a small scale. Diva's mum is Roundhills Cream Rose from Jan Browne's stud.

My other horse Jazz is out of a mare by Moonshine Vision who was sire of Shine on Harvey Moon!. I have just found a picture of Shine on Harvey Moon on line. Lovely big stamp of horse so your girl is going to be stunning. Dont be surprised if she keeps growing - Saddlebreds can make 17hh!! My Diva is rising 6 and will be 16hh I think - still bum high. How do you post pictures on here?

There are also Saddlebred shows down your way - Equifest is one. You must get her out and about. You should all come along to the Moreton Morrell show on 26th May even if just to watch and meet Saddlebred folk. Diva and I will look out for you. We will also be at the 3 Counties Show if any of you are around look us up.

Enjoy your gorgeous horses. They are THE most comfortable horses to ride - EVER!!

I have 2 little fillies who's gramd sire is american saddlebred - npt sure if this means I can join the party or not? Lol

Wolf looks stunning btw esteryoung!

Definitely would love to meet up, I'm away week commencing 24th May so sadly wont make that one but hope to get to Three counties (horseless!) If anyone is ever near North Devon and needs a stable/gallop on beach/trek on Exmoor I'm happy to accommodate.

Now that sounds tempting! :) Btw my palomino is rising 4 not rising 6! My typing is getting really sloppy!!

And an American Saddlebred grandsire makes your fillies 25% so eligible for registration with the United Saddlebred Association - UK. You really must get them registered and tell everyone what they are. People in this country dont know what Saddlebreds are and what they can do. When you dont put weights on their hooves and train them with bungies to high step, they are natural athletes and there actually arent very many that are "gaited". They compete at a very high level in all disciplines. Roundhills Starlight Express took her young rider to HOYS in showjumping, Harry Callaghan is high level dressage in the States and Galahad's Golden Warrior was used to demonstrate high school dressage movements - look up Cowboy Dressage.

Not to mention the fact that every gorgeous horse in the films are saddlebreds - My friend Flicka, Champion the Wonder Horse, Mister Ed, Trigger, the horses in Gone With the Wind, Pilgrim in The Horse Whisper.

Saddlebreds are a hidden gem. Enjoy yours. You wont regret having one.

Thanks for all the lovely comments about Wolf. I must admit I'm a bit biased but I'm smitten - I just hope I can do him justice.

His saddlebred side was a bit of an unknown quantity for me, but so far I'm liking lots and I must admit it's quite interesting having a horse whose pedigree reads like a 'who's who' of the American Civil War. The breed is a real piece of history.

It's origins are ironically in england - the palfrey in Shakespeare and English ambler - extinct in this country but living on in saddlebreds
