After my coming 6 yr old was taken out with a virus in Sept last year, and 5 or 6 blood tests later, his results are improving (as at 3 weeks ago) i was feeling so down!

He is a lethargic character anyway! Shows a lot of resistance to the leg (bucks etc)

Anyway, good news is i have been fittening him up - gentle hacking to start with (following vets advice to crack on and get him fit again) and working up over about 7 weeks to cantering him now in the menage. He has been fed Pure Feed Racing mix since about October last yr and it has made a fantastic difference to his energy levels and his working attitude.

He feels like a different horse, really strong and powerful (17.1h warmblood), actually pulling on me now which he has never done.

His natural carriage is very low, so i have changed bits to a NS elevator with lozenge, and tried it out yesterday and it works a treat, his head carriage was a lot lighter and definitely not carrying it so low! Long may it continue! :) just hope he doesnt become resistant to this bit

Even had a little jump on him at the end of the session (just a cross pole a 3 or 4 times) and he felt amazing! Got himself quite excited on the approach and pinged about 4 ft in the air each time!

So glad to have him back on better form!

Hoping to have him competition fit again by beginning of April so we can crack on with his BS

Just wanted to share my good news

cant wait to get going with him but always in the back of my head is when he has a next blood test that the results could be worse again :( positive thinking i think i need!

gonna do a lot more work on his and my flatwork this year and get him moving off my leg a lot more

have taken my spurs off now and just ride with a schooling whip instead to back up my legs if he doesnt listen

Hey Lyndsay

Glad to hear your horse is doing well now. My rising 6 year old is on box rest  but vet doesn't think it will be for too long. :)

Have you got photos up on here of your horses?

He's had a keratoma removed from his hoof. Its good really, I've known something wasn't right for months and at least now it should be fixed. At first i was looking at up to a year of box rest while the foot re-grows but they only had to cut about two thirds of the way up the hoof and the vet thinks another month or two stabled then he should be able to go out. There's always something with horses isn't there?

It would be nice to see the horses you've got now. You must be dying to get going with this young show jumper.

Desperate to get him going Karen! He gives such a good feeling over a fence too so its been a painful wait since Sept!

Hope your youngster gets right soon! At least you know what it is now!

Horses always keep you on your toes. This long stint has taught me not to take him for granted and to enjoy every ride even in the bad weather!
