FINNY NEEDS AN OPERATION

Had to take Finny to the vets this morning as his eye was very inflammed....

He needs an operation

He's got what is called Cherry Eye - which apparently is common in Mastiffs/Dogue De Bordeaux's as they are big dogs with droopey eyes...

The vets have never heard of a RR having it though.. but then he is a big boy with droppey eyes

Have got to take him back to arrange when he can go away to the opthamology (sp?) specialist ...

My poor baby - just been to pets at home and spent £41 on toys!!

I'm sssooo worried about the anesthetic

... and the fact that he will have to be away from me... he cries if I go out the room anywhere but at home!!

try not to worry about it! My girl survived anesthetic at 6weeks and Finn is a big strong boy! How long will he have to be away from you? The vets should let you visit him if he's away for a few days!

[/ QUOTE ]*tears in eyes now* I don't know how long - will have to discuss it on Tuesday with them.. I'm hoping it can be an in/out in a day op - will go with him whereever he has to go!!!

TBF - he's sat here chewing on a new 'hide' donut ring not giving a monkies!! - It's not irritating him - just doesn't look very nice - have got some tablets to reduce the swelling and some eye drops too. x
 
I don't whether you have seen this already but there is some info about the condition and the operation here:

It does describe it as a simple surgical procedure so he shouldn't have to be under GA for very long. I'm sure he'll be fine, although I appreciate how worrying it can be to have a dog go for an op.

It was when the vet said - she's tried the op a couple of times and it's failed but the other vet may have more success OR that we could go through a specialist!! Hmm wonder which one I'm going for!!!!

Poor Finn. don't worry hun, he's a fit and healthy boy he will cope with the GA just fine. Ki had to have GA when he was about Finns age and he was ok (really funny afterwards though, bless him, it took him a while to wake up properly).

Hello you! Do not worry. Hazzie puppy is almost 5 years old and has been under anaesthetic 6 times already, one without starvation as an emergency and he was under for 3 hours. Wolfhounds are very specialised anaesthesia cases a lot of the time due to size and each time he has made a text book recovery. The anesthetic advances nowadays are phenomenal and of course all surgery has risks but Finny is a fit young thing and all checks and blood tests will be taken before to check liver etc. function. They often sedate as soon as Finny is in there so that he is much more relaxed by the time you leave and he is ready for surgery. Cherry eye is very common and fairly straight forward. Get all your questions together for the specialist and write them down and ask away. Our old Vets who were fantastic had an Opthalamist specialist and she did this sort of thing regularly.
Chin up and do not worry! I have been present at the emergency knocking out of Haz and it was fascinating to watch and non traumatic. Haz is a swine for going to the vets and the moment he has recovered from the anaesthetic he will do anything to get out. He has removed 2 kennel doors and dragged several vets at once across the floor! He is still fit and fine and still goes to the vets!!!!!

Thanks - it's still a huge worry - god it'll be like having my heart ripped out leaving him - I'm panicking about leaving him when we go on holiday in May!!

I hope like you say - they will sedate him before I leave - that way he won't get too upset - not sure about me though!!

dont worry about anaesthetic very rarely does anything go wrong (usually with old dogs and dogs in shock under going emergency surgery)!

he can come to us...honest we are opthamology specialists! *now the dosey so and so will leve him with me and i can pinch him

must say if he hadnt chased it i think i would have disowned him!

although in his defnse he did find a sheep in the bog...it was just its back u could see(had drowned) but was dead so i wasnt doing any heroics
 
Cherry eye is fairly common in BTs. It is genetic, so your dog shouldn't be bred (and it wouldn't be a bad idea to tell the breeder you got Finny from about the condition).

I'm sure your vet knows this, but it's much better to "tuck" the cherry eye back in, as removing it entirely causes a reduction of tear production.

I'm sure the little guy will be right as rain very quickly

Ask the vet to sedate him immediately and ask if you can stay with him until it kicks in. Ours let us do this and Mr P. actually sat inside the cage with him until it was time to operate! I kept poking him through the bars! Mr P. that is not Hazzie!

Anaestics these days are very good not much consolation though I guess.

I'm sure he will be fine, he is a ig strong pup in great health always had rabbits bits off at 6 months and if something that tiny can cope Finny will be great.

[/ QUOTE ]Yup or else they can suffer from'dry eye' , yes the vet did mention tucking in rather than removing. However she said she would feel more confident if he saw a specialist which I'm more than happy to go with!!
