My 2 dogs are scared of the fireworks, I know this isnt unusual but it makes me very angry that people cant just let them off on firework night!!
According to this link

it is against the law to let fireworks off after 11pm, yet last night there people letting them off until midnight. If someone is letting them off this late again tonight, who do you actually call? I assume it would be the police?

For one night a year, being an hour late with noise isn't the end of the world?
Give your dogs some calmers from the vets for the night?
Really an hour one night a year.. :)

That says that bonfire night the limit is midnight, but any other time, you would need to contact the police, but I doubt they'd do much.

I would put the TV on, the lights on, even a bit of salsa music and just ride this one out. x

Sadly there are some areas where it is not just one night a year. We had them going off last weekend and every night so far since Friday. We are in a very rural farming area so they don't go on til late here but still irritating when you have livestock.

I think you misread - fireworks night is 5 november. In our area the 'festivities' go on for a week either side of it, my dogs are both on calmers and I have plenty of experience training dogs so everything has always been done right for them.

So I did :)
If it was every night for a week I'd be complaining also. A one off I'd let it slip!

I dont think its worth ringing police to be honest they probably have much more important things to deal with. 1 hour isn't much and most dogs get scared, give them some carmers, its only a few days in a year!

sorry, thought you asked for support and advice, my mistake. Maybe with the increased exposure your dogs will learn to settle more ?

EDIT - if you ask your vets, they may be able to lend you a de-sensitising CD. This includes fireworks, gunshots, thunder and lightening cracks. We've used it as Percy Pup is going to be a therapy dog - and although it's very slow work, the one thing that you must not do to ANY reaction from the dog is to REACT BACK. Totally ignore - I know that I ruined my terrier for life by reacting, thinking I was doing the right thing.

We get them all year round, more this time of year admittedly, during daylight hours as well as 1.39 am as we had last week, how are you supposed to calm a dog down when it's constant and you never know when they are going to let them off.
IF it was one night of the year I wouldn't mind but in reality it isn't.

agree with you samlf!!!!!! i can cope with nov 5th but get really fed up with 2 weeks of it, my lurcher is in a state again tonight, i cant keep her on calmers for 2 weeks!!!!!!! its about time that fireworks were not sold to the general public and were only let off on nov 5th at proper licensed displays then we could all cope with it...as you can tell from this i am REALLY P....D OFF!!!!!!!!:mad:

Not really any need for that - all I asked was for who to call?
The reason I asked for who to call, was because I didnt want to bother explaining that both my dogs have always been desensitised to gunshots etc, we never ever reassure them when scared, they are both on veterinary calmers. Our neighbours are very intolerant, and one of the dogs started barking last night at 11.30pm when the fireworks were still going off constantly because she was too scared to be left on her own (she copes if someone is in the room). I dont want our neighbours to complain about US when it is not our fault someone ELSE is breaking the law.

apologies, been at the pub. we have the damned things going off outside now, and the terrier is sat next to me sleeping - the first time in YEARS.

Wishing you all the best x

Well, we had some people here who decided it would be good to set their fireworks off at 4am this morning! Thankfully they were not too close to my house but I could hear them. Bet their immediate neighbours were dead impressed!

I thought we had them pretty badly round here but maybe it's actually pretty reasonable as they have only been going off since Thurs/Fri now and really aren't too bad.

I do wonder what it is about some dogs that make them scared when others aren't. Is it a learned behaviour or are some just naturally scared of such things? My dog doesn't seem to give a monkeys!

We are in a rural area and STILL they have been going off for several days now. Just last night a friend's dog was killed after it was spooked by one and ran into the road. Wasn't even dark and wasn't bonfire night. Really sad. I hate the things, but until they change the law I don't think you can do anything about it. And they won't change the law cos it's not a vote winner really is it? :(

Samlf - gently does it, if you come onto a public forum you need to accept what posters say, it doesn't mean they are getting at you.

if I was you I would go to your neighbours and apologise beforehand in case your dogs disturb them, then I would just keep your dogs close by and wait it through, a pain in the rectum we all know but that's life!

putasocinit - she has edited her post since the one I quoted, but I probably was a bit short.

The one dog that did start barking, we actually thought she was fine with fireworks. We make sure we keep very relaxed and dont fuss etc when fireworks are going off and she has always been fine, because people have been around. They live downstairs and we went to bed early before they stopped, that was when we discovered she is actually is scared of them when alone, hence not being able to mention it to next door!

You think you got problems !!

I live in Leicester and we have an asian festival which is allowed to 1am !!!!

That is tonight the 4th and tomorrow is the 5th so is midnight

Both of these days have a normal workday following them which make it very unfair to those early starters especially those who drive for a living

In past years I have had to call in 'unfit to drive' a car let alone the LGV after such times due to lack of sleep

Its about time we had more reasonable laws or banned all but organised displays

Our local plod are great though - they will turn out if going over the prescribed times by more than 10 mins

Oh dear - I really do agree that theres no need for people to be letting off explosives in their garden these days. There are loads of organised displays, it is dangerous and more expensive at home, scares children and pets. There really is no need!

My nieces little dog was PTS last night after being so frightened by fireworks that she had a stroke and then fitted. Very sad.

Tbh, even if you have 4 police cars outside your house just waiting to catch the culprits, with the best will in the world they aren't going to be able to track them down.

My poor greyhound is wedged in the gap next to the sofa puffing & panting & very distressed, it wasn't too bad last night, but tonight massive explosions like a war zone. Our most considerate next door neighbours are having a lovely time at their fireworks party, perhaps they could have popped round & told us?? Maybe I will wait till much later when their little daughter is in bed & out on some nice loud music, after all its our house & we can do what we want & sod everyone else, right??

they are so annoying! scared my horse and dog silly! came to the yard this morning to find a great gash on my mares face from panicking in her stable, rearing up and catching herself on the door frame!

One night?Seriously??It started over a week ago...and at 4 in the afternoon today in the broad daylight...my neighbours are clearly idiots. Last night world war three was going off in the garden from the second it was dark till way past midnight. I dare say it will go on for a good week after, then we get the early excitable christmas & new year ones. Several of them were pointed at my house by these retards, some missed, some didn't. Its a hateful nightmare, my dog has been shaking & incredibly stressed, but realised what his palace crate was for (always refused point blank to go in it previously so thats one good thing!)he has a thundershirt on & some vetiver oil on it too(his calming oil choice) I've put a drop of lavender on the radiators too and a throw over his pup palace..I've hidden lots of treat balls stuffed with turkey. and tv on full blast - they actually had the nerve to complain about my tv, so i put some incredibly loud music on instead...they are getting classical tonight just incase they were enjoying it...Carmina Burana is quite dramatic to hide the bangs..but I'm thinking William tell overture next..just because it would be funny...youtubing music from various horsey tv coverage, rather fun! It seems to be doing the trick.. I know its all for 'fun' but really can they not just ban the noisy ones? That or we all move to Switzerland...nobady would DARE set them off past the allowed hours there..the police seem to have a much larger respect over there than our do here...

It really is time that fireworks can only be sold to people having organised displays and then only allowed on the 5th, its been going on for a week now and its not even the 5th til tomorrow. Poor animals are terrified.
