After yesterday's little upset I was considering putting a little doggy first aid kit in the boot of the car, any ideas on what should go in there? I know you can buy them ready made up but I was thinking it might be cheaper to buy the essential bits separately?

For those who don't read the diary thread and are interested, Henry got jumped on by a group of dogs and was left quite shaken. No harm done this time but it did sound as though he was being skinned alive, and I'm not that close the emergency vets at weekends as the branch practice we normally visit is not open.

What with that and his spangley barbed wire-related habits, it seems like a good idea to chuck a few bits into the boot!

I was thinking antiseptic wipes of some kind and dressings would be the most important bits, anything else?

I'd include some vetrap or alternative as well - oh and some cotton wool & a small bottle of hibiscrub.

Hope Henry has recovered from his ordeal

I dont have a canine first aid kit really, the dogs make do with bits from my human and equine ones

I tend to use melolin pads (brilliant for scrapes/grazes/cuts as they are non stick), antiseptic and plasters/tape?

How about tweezers for getting thorns out? Anything else my lot have done tends to be a vet job as far as I can remember...

Tweezers are a must, stick them in your pocket duriung grass seed season. It means you stand a chance at whipping the boggers out of ears before they disappear from sight! Saves lots of costly Vet's bills!

Apart from that, Otto makes do with Hibiscrub, gauze pads and some Derma Gel, anything else that couldn;t be sorted with that and he'd probably go to the Vet's.

I've got a storage box FULL of goodies... including ...

- Cotton Wool
- Dettol
- Cotton Buds
- Tweezers
- Scissors
- Vetwrap (sp?)
- Hibiscrub
- poultice
- Large bowl (for dipping paws etc)
- towels/flannels
- hairbrush (not my own of course!)
- toothbrush (also not my own!)
- wasp/bee cream/AH tablets
- variouis creams - savlon/germoline/teatree etc
- T bags (for sore eyes)
- and more towels!!!

Sorry to hear that Han, hope he won't be too badly shaken up by his experience.

Cotton wool, aloe vera, big bottle of water and a human first aid kit are always in the car anyway

Good thinking everyone! GH, I don't have a human first aid kit or I would just use that

I'm not that organised!

Normally I just hibiscrub his war wounds when we get home but this got me thinking how much trouble we'd have been in if he had needed the vet pronto, as it's a good half hour away.

He's fine TKB - a little more cautious in approaching other dogs at the moment, but sure that will wear off! It did sound like they were killing him at the time but I think they just scared him

Flipping dogs and their owners - who then had a pop at me as well! Some people!

A few rolls of bandages and some vet wrap, lots of cotton wool, some safasilk(sticky tape for bandages) water in a little bottle and a towel.
A splint

A bit iron bar to fend off nasty attacking dogs

I don't drive my dogs anywhere to go for walks, so I don't have any particular dog first aid kit in the car, however I have one storage box with first aid things in both the city home and summer home. On any longer walks that isn't just on the road outside the house, e.g. going to get the newspaper during the summer and such things (where I would still just scoop up the dog and run home, to my big first aid box), I always carry one of those smallish first aid kits with me.

Things I can remember being in my big first aid boxes :

Cotton wool.
A sort of cotton wool that is water proof/doesn't absorb liquids.
Lots of different bandages, gauze, elastic and vetrap.
Compresses.
Latex gloves (e.g. in case my hands are dirty and I need to clean a wound).
Several tweezers and tick removers.
Scissors + dog nail clippers.
Thermometer + white vaseline to lubricate it.
Cotton wool buds.
Medical tape of different sorts and shapes, e.g. Micropore and some water proof sort.
Blood stopping stuff, one for claws and something that resembles small pieces of cotton.
Three different sorts of antiseptics, wound cleaning liquids.
Some different sorts of ointments.
Doggy toothbrushes, metal thing you can scrape the teeth with (

that sounds terrible but it isn't) and doggy toothpaste.
Ear cleaning liquid.
Stuff for sore paws (due to e.g. road salt).
Dog boots to protect a paw bandage.
Elizabethan collars (though they don't fit in the box, they are stored nearby).
A thingy that can be helpful when you want to give your cat a pill.
Procoline or similar if the dogs or cats gets the runs.
Small syringes without needles, that I can give fluid or liquid medicines with in the mouth.

A list with the names, birthdates, ID numbers and possible medications, for my current animals (in case I'm not home).
In the box in the summer house, I have a list with telephone numbers to some vet clinics/hospitals (that box is almost below the phone).

I also keep a package with sticking plasters for humans, that I can cut off in the size I want, in or besides the first aid box.

Glad to hear that Henry is more or less okay, by the sound of it, it must have been terrible for both you and him when it happened.
