Bonkers black pony is just a little bit ever so excited. He has been on his bestest bestest behaviour on the yard this week, first with a suspected tendon injury and then during that time getting terrible cellulitis via a hive that turned to a scab on his elbow. Really nasty with a sore, raw, swollen elbow and armpit and swelling down his leg through which serum is forcing its way through the skin. Poor chap, be has been so good the whole week.

Yesterday vet said I had to get him walking to clear fluid build up. Field is a bog so this means taking him across the road (lit up like a Christmas tree) to my friends arena.

This is all apparently super exciting. First thing he did was drop next to me into the longest scratchyest roll in the world, followed by about 10 second pause and then rearing, bucking, leaping and squeaking for the next 3 circuits of the arena before he managed to get hold of himself and walk nicely. Poor chap, he isn't used to keeping all 4 feet on the floor for so long.

Question is, will he get better, or worse?! If it is a tendon I could have months of this!

I'd reckon he sounds like he'll calm down after a few attempts. Mine refused to after 3 months box rest and after 2 weeks of rearing in hand I gave up on vets advice and chucked him in a small paddock....

Sounds like he was more than happy to have a change of scenery :)

Over the years I've found that hand walking on an arena surface after box rest it always more risky than walking them on tarmac/concrete. For some reason they seem to realise that they shouldn't mess around on a hard surface.

This , I am currently walking one 4 months into rest, going out in the field on Fiday:eek:, he is fine on the yard walking a bit like a donkey but one foot on the arena and he is impossible to keep a lid on, so just walking round the yard for safety.

I did think I'd be better on the road, but its so dark before and after work I don't dare do more than cross it. He's a crazy fool even when in full work so I'm not holding my breath for a quiet time.

Good luck, mine was an idiot after a few weeks of box rest and restricted turnout. He had to do 6 months in total, with the only exercise being in hand, and ridden walk, then trotting. If you start having to do ridden work whilst he's still on box rest, I can firmly recommend having some drawreins as an emergency measure, and don't feed a balancer either - my v sensible, steady Luso x was WILD :D

I really don't know why the Spanish riding school get such high praise...tonight I was given the full works, levade, capriole, everything, and all I had to do was keep him in for 7 days. Thank god he's only 14hh! If he doesn't need a tranquiliser I think I sure as hell will if he has to be in for months!

Reread first sentence of that last post I then found these...he had obviously been practicing without my help:
