Hi all,

Sorry I know this has been done to death but my loan pony and I are entering our first unaff dressage at the end of September and being a natural stress head want to make sure we've got everything right.

She's a dapple grey 13.2 new forest with brown tack, no martingale and a snaffle so think her tack is fine. Just need to borrow a white square off someone on the yard.

I have black jodhpur boots so was thinking of buying some black leather gaiters (mine are just the cheap synthetic ones from Decathlon!), I've found a second hand black show jacket for £20 on Facebook market place, a shirt online for £6 and a tied stock for £20. I've been advised that beige jods will look better on an off white pony so will buy a pair of those too and a hair net?

Daily I ride in a black champion hat but I do also have a plain black velvet one with the cream leather straps - would that be better?

Also would you go for black or cream gloves? Everything I've read says cream is better but at the lower levels can get away with black.

I don't want to spend a fortune but don't mind buying a few bits second hand as it's a monthly comp held at our yard so would like to keep up with it if possible.

Sorry I know this has been done to death but just wanted to check our outfits will be ok? We're going to do intro and prelim though I need to put in some serious transition work as she does have a habit of running into canter. Are whips generally acceptable? A tap of the whip tends to get a smoother quicker transition although we're working from getting it from the leg.

Thanks in advance for reading and any advice ☺️

I used to compete BD with a black numnah rather than white square. Black gloves are fine too and either hat providing it's up to current standards. Don't feel you have to follow the crowds. Just have a look at the online handbook (BD website) and you'll see all of what you have described is perfectly acceptable.
Re the shirt, make sure it doesn't have a collar if you're wearing a stock. (ie not a shirt that you would wear a tie with). Youll need a stock shirt which has a little half collar thingie to allow for the stock.
Enjoy!

Hmm yes I might go for a saddle shaped numnah as I think the white will look awful against her as she's sort of an off white colour and I don't want to make her look dirty ? thanks all for your suggestions they're really helpful!

I have a grey jacket and use a grey dressage square, grey gloves and cream breeches. In the old days you wore a tweed jacket at prelim and novice but nowadays you rarely see this.

BD rules just say that gloves must be worn and no longer stipulate the colour.

Black leather gaiters with black jod boots are allowed.

You probably already know but the horse cannot wear boots in the test but they are OK for warming up and you cannot have bit 'biscuits'.

Good luck! As per the posters above, your outfit sounds fine but equally don't splash a lot of cash if you don't want to. A cheap shirt from Tesco / Asda with any plain-ish tie (no cartoons :p) would be fine!

At unaff, as long as you look neat and tidy you'll be fine. Make sure you breath and enjoy riding your pony!

So just to update you all...

We managed to find a Pikeur black jacket for £30 on Facebook market place, some off white jods from the same place for £7 (for 2 pairs), a show shirt for £5 and were borrowing a white saddle cloth, stock and black whip! I did buy a pair of gaiters for £30 but needed some anyway. All in all I'm feeling pretty good about my finds! All booked on for Prelim 14 and Intro A this Saturday so will let you all know how we get on, both of our first time and incredibly nervous!!

Thanks all! Reporting back as promised... We scored 67.5% in the Intro A and came third and currently awaiting our results for Prelim 14... Did miss the canter on the right rein but got it after the marker and also missed a change the rein and went straight so overall happy with our first go but feeling sad that 2 rider errors let her down in the 2nd test!

Prelim14 results are in... 65.2%! Gutted for her as my error of course had us 2 marks deducted so would've been 66% without that but hey ho! Both comments were maintain impulsion to secure a contact so got some things to work on for next time but I am over the moon with her!
