Hey fellow broken people! How are you all doin?

Just an update on my broken upper arm. I rode today for the first time in eight weeks. It went really well! Last time I saw the bone doctor I was told I could ride after ten weeks but got my dates mixed up so went today.

I wasn't nervous once I was riding and even managed some decent and soft contact on the right rein - getting on and off was a different matter though.

I originally did myself in by falling off while trying to mount (I know - ha ha) so mounting felt a bit weird. And I had to get off in a rather odd way by swinging my leg over the boy's head and sliding down off the side.

Horses make good slides btw!

However, after my ride I went to fracture clinic. I saw a new doctor and he said I was doing really well healingwise. But then he said I wasn't allowed to ride until after Christmas! What a bummer.

Do you think I should call them back and ask for clarification? I don't wanna wait six more weeks. Today was so much fun and cheered me up loads (we lost our lovely little cat on tues), and I needed cheering up.

Bloomin' bones!

Oh well done! I got back in the saddle 5 weeks ago after breaking my wrist (fell off coming down a bank) and it definitely is good for the soul. My physio did give me the ok though. I haven't gone back to the same level I was at before (yet) but have found a lovely, relatively straighforward little mare to share for the meantime.

I found that everytime I went to the fracture clinic I got different opinions about everything from whether the break had displaced to when my cast should come off. Are you able to see someone privately? It costs, but I felt much better after seeing the private specialist and it is reassuring to have someone take the time over your case rather than the production line feeling I got at the fracture clinic.

Good luck and hope you heal quickly.

so long as i doesnt hurt and you dont do anything hard to strain it more, just keep going! as the other post said, you'll get different opinions every time you go to the docs - YOU are the best person to say how well it feels!

I rode today (first time in only a week tho!!) after landing on my head and being stuck solid from elbows up all week, i didnt bother going off anywhere to ask if it was ok, i felt fine and have done for a few days and made sure i only rode the quiet ones so that i didnt strain anything. Had i have gone to the docs they'd only make me do concussions tests and physio etc and wait for weeks for the results. Can do all that myself!

Only do what you feel you can do - dont push it, just enjoy it!

Well done you! I rode for the first time in 8 weeks too last week. I've made a rule that I can only do gentle happy hacking (I'm awaiting an op, so not fixed yet), which is easy to do as mine are both unclipped and unfit! I've also made a rule that I'm not allowed to ride alone - so theres someone there if anything happens.. Surely if you do that too, on a sensible horse, that doesn't pull at the reins, or shake its head, then you wouldn't need to use your arm too much? I also find getting on from a tall mounting block helps a lot. Good luck...xx

wahoo thats fabby. I would not normally advise going against a Dr but your first one said it would be ok. The only thing I would say is has the Dr you recently saw seen something to alter the time scale??

Just be careful whatever you decide. I know only too well what happens when broken bones don't heal right. see my I'm so happy I could burst post
:D

Hey congrats on a successful first ride! I am very jealous as still looking forward to mine! I fractured my knee on the 23rd of august and my surgeon has told me not to ride until at least mid dec so I am trying to do some physio so I am not horredously wonky when I get back on. I have thought about being naughty and getting back on before then by tbh my knee still doesn't feel great, it is pretty weak still, quite achey and I don't have full range of movement.

On a far less exciting note I do have my first day back in the office tomorrow...oh joy.

Yeah!!

As with everything Baby Steps! If you know you aren't going to make it worse in the long term then enjoy the riding. However, if you know and feel that you really should wait, at least you have had a taster session!

Happy healing :D

You must have felt so happy to be back on board! Just be very careful and let pain be your guide. I'm 14 weeks into a broken ankle and am having a go on a mechanical horse tomorrow to test the waters before I get on the real thing!!

Your arm will tell you if it's not ready! I got back on my horse (quaking in terror) after my dislocated elbow after 5 weeks, the physio said I was fine to ride as long as I didn't fall off (!) - she said you are just as likely to fall down the stairs or trip over at work so don't worry about it. It was easier for me tho because my arm was stuck fast with a right angle bend at the elbow - so fine for riding!! It was about the only sport I could actually manage to do...

Ah - thanks guys. I'll see wht the physio says tonight. It certainly doesn't hurt to ride - and it doesn't hurt today at all. It's only my legs and bum that are sore - ha ha.

I'd love to go private but I just don't think I can afford it at the mo. I don't know if the new doctor saw anything new in the xrays so I'll prob leave it for the next six weeks. I'm lucky (in a way) because I don't have my own to worry about exercising so it's just a case of booking lessons as and when.

I'll just save the money I would have spent on lessons and put it into my horse fund. It's a shame because I got on so well yesterday and the instructor said I needed to move into a more challenging lesson....

Here's to next year. Glad to hear you guys seems to be healing and getting back on too! It's so exciting and so nice not to have been put off by hitting the ground!

I know exactly how you feel. 6 years ago I broke my arm very badly, it healed after 5 months so I got the all clear, only to have the first horse I rode fall on top of me so I broke the other arm! As long as you're not in pain, then I can't see why you shouldn't ride AS LONG as you're being very very careful. ie. gentle hacking, a bit of schooling, no jumping etc.

Good for you i'm dying to get back on and its only been 3weeks for me. I fractured my arm 3 weeks ago and had the cast off yesterday at the fracture clinic. The doctor told me that I was to just "crack on" with things within my own pain threshold as it would be worse if my muscles seized up anymore. So back riding next week I think much to my OH's protesting

most doctors dont understand horses and horse riders, they think that the former are dangerous and the latter are nuts! If you tell yr doctor tonight that you HAVE ridden and that it WAS fine and STILL IS fine and pain free and can he pretty please agree that you can start building up the regular riding slowly then they'll usually agree!

Ossy's doctor sounds like a refreshing change from the doom and gloom they normally spout when confronted with a rider!
