hello just wondered if any one can help me draw up a rough fitness plan.
my mare had been in fairly hard workuntil the beginning of december and shes now had around 4 weeks off, im going to start hacking out gently now, and she hasnt losta great deal of muscle tone, but wondered if anyone has a nice easy to follow plan.

problen is i have nowhere to lunge and riding is still going to be faily limited with the problem of no riding after scholl, but if i ams uper organised i may be able to ride 3/4 times a week and once shes been ridden a bit i can start havin some lessons in the evemnings.
unfortunatly it will only be hacking until i can start lessons again as i have no menage or any where where i can school....
so i know its awkward but any advice would be much appreciated..it will atleast give me somewhere to head!

many thanks

What were you doing with her before her break? What level of fitness was she at? What do you plan to do with her once she is fit? This will help draw up a fitness plan....

Are you hoping to do Isleham on her?

You shouldn't have too many probs as long as she has been regularly turned out.

Just bring her back up slowly and carefully adding a bit more every 2 days or so.

She was quite fit before her break wasn't she ? so she should pick up again quickly.

hi, yes she was working pretty hard up till start od december, she had winded down slightly as i dont have the facilities but i was still having regular lessons during the week and riding at weekends.

i will be starting out PN eventing in March fingers crossed!! Thistle-yep i am hoping to do isleham!

There was an article in H&H a few weeks ago. Horses racing fit were just turned out for 10 weeks. When they were brought in they had the same level of aerobic fitness as before. It was just the muscle/fat ratio that had changed.

Once horses are fit, they are easy to keep fit or fitten after a short break. Excess work just adds wear and tear to joints.

Thistle took the words out of my mouth! ...... great minds

hacking is the best way for stamina fitness

so carry on with that (and you can also add in some schooling movements along the way.... lengthen shorten... ickle bit sideways etc... keep them thinking

loads of road work if he's only had a month off than should be fine ti start at 3/4-1hr and work up from there, introducing short burts of trot and hill work.

walking on the roads is great jjust make sure he's really striding out and you can also spend bits of your hack asking for a correct outline, leg yeilding, shoulder in, giving and taking the reins ect ect.
