I've got a Waterford full cheek on trial and tried it out yesterday, my horse went well in it and soon realised she had nothing to lean against.

I'm just worried about the bit pinching the sides of her mouth as I bought a 6" when she usually goes in a 5.5" and on each side half of the the last link is showing at the side of her mouth.

I can put bit rings on but not sure if that will make a difference as it won't cover the last link.

Can anyone help me by showing me pictures of how their Waterford fits on the side of their horses mouth or letting me know how long it should be to avoid pinching.

Thanks :)

Our ID mare hunts in a full cheek Waterford, but she has the same size in it as her flatwork loose ring bit.

I would think a full cheek would work better with a snugger fit.

I will have a look this evening on photobucket for a close up pic..

agree, I hack and used to jump my oldie in a waterford full cheek and she has the same size as normal so it's pretty snug.

if it's on trial, can you send it back and get a smaller one?

Glad this was posted.

I have been using a lose ring Waterford on my horse... and he's normally a 5.75 fitting, so I bought the next size up, 6" and this seemed to slightly look as though the corners of his mouth could be pinched.. so then I bought a 6.5" - and this just seems too big, especially as the Waterford hangs within the mouth....

Are these bits difficult to size? or is it the brands that are different in size?

I use a loose ring waterford for jumping. When I bought it I was told to go up a 1/4" to 1/2" from what he normally takes as it needs to be slightly longer to curl round their lips to work to their full potential. I don't know if having full cheeks to loose ring though...

I use bit guards but that's a Waterford 3 ring gag (so loose ring) on a horse with VERY fleshy lips. His is a 6" (as are his other bits) and in an ideal world I'd have a 6 1/4" but nowhere seems to make them so I had to make do. I got the thinnest bit guards I could find. He also only wears it about 3 times a year for fun rides when he can see horses up ahead and wants to do all he can to catch up with them.
