Has anyone seen this before? I noticed my gelding had skin peeling off in his nostrils and corners of his mouth this morning, when I tried to clean him up there was a little bit of blood. He also has some small bumps under the skin on his neck. He seems well in himself with a little nasal discharge.

When I spoke to the vet he was concerned about strangles, although my horse has not been in contact with any horses that have travelled and he has not been anywhere himself. I wondered if he could have eaten something that would have caused this reaction?

Any ideas?

Has he got a pink muzzle and is it a bit scabby ? Our mare has similiar and it is the rain and mild weather which has caused it. Have washed with diluted hibiscrub and then once dry sudocrem is improving.

Have you put any fly cream or anything on it in the last week or so? Mine reacts to fly repellant around her nose by shedding the skin around there. Unless the skin is causing any probs then I would leave well alone. By picking and trying to remove the flaky bits you could cause more irritation. I would only gently rinse with salt water if there is any discharge from the scabs, otherwise I would leave well alone.

Very strange, I bathed his nose twice yesterday with warm water and cut & graze and this morning it's almost completely gone! Must be some kind of contact dermatitis!

Anyway as long as he's better and definately not showing any signs of strangles!
