Fluffy ears - what do you do with them?!

I haven't noticed it before but my (warmblood) horse seems to have got some very fluffy hair growing out of his ears and it looks really silly - a bit like an old man!

I suppose when I clip him I remove most of it, but how can I get rid of the hair without making it look 'cut' in the meantime?
 
Is the hair growing out from inside the ears? I squeeze the edges of the ear together and then carefully snip off any hair that sticks out. Make sure you leave the hair that is inside the ear to keep the flies etc out. If you cut downwards then you can make a neat job of it

I clip the outside of my mares ears this time of year because they get all downy with long cat hairs, and usually tidy up round the edges while I'm at it.
 
My mare is a TB but has the most ridiculously furry ears if i don't keep them tidy - looks like Fozzy bear from the muppets

I use a small pair of electric trimmers to trim them - they only look freshly cut for a couple of days and then the sharp "edge" seems to disappear and they look normal
 
clip them or scissor them! i wouldnt clip them right out at moment as still flies about. i would fully clip them in march and then keep them trimmed close for the rest of year!
 
I cut my horses ear fluff (squeeze the ear together slightly and cut off the overhanging hair) I don't cut it short (ie into the ear) but in winter I will leave it slightly longer still or don't cut it at all depends how fluffy he gets.
 
Hopefully not this, but has your horse had fluffy ears before?

Knew a teenage mare who developed fluffy ears. Sadly no one on the yard had realised it was her first sign of cushings disease until the mare developed laminitis.

Sorry to sound scary, but if the fluffy ears are new it might be worth discussing with vet on their next visit.
 
My horse gets very fluffy easr in the winter !!! he looks like he has big wooly ear muffs on !!!!!lol

niceweatheronly -- is this really a sign of cushings ??? i had never really thought of that , i think my boy is ok , he has always got hairy ears, its not just started or anything .

The fluffy ears were the only sign in this mare. But from memory, they became fluffy in the spring ie April/May time. We all thought this was incredibly cute until the lami hit and then the news it was cushings.

She didn't have any curly/long fur.

The mare was a warmblood who had not previously had fluffy ears, even in winter.

I wouldn't consider "winter fluffies" to be the same
