My poor skewbald mare is really suffering with the flies at the moment. She has come in the last few days with huge bites on her despite wearing fly spray and a fly rug.

She has a post Liverpool cream treatment sarcoid healing on her belly at the moment which I'm a bit unsure how to protect from the flies. I'm currently using an antiseptic fly repellent gel around but not actually on the wound. Does anyone have an better recommendations?

She also has a pink belly and pink armpits which just seem to be savaged by the flies at this time of year, especially on the belly you can see little red bits where the flies have had a little munch.

She is currently in at day and out at night as I thought this was best to avoid the flies, she also where's a fly rug with a neck but I'm thinking about upping the anti and getting something that covers a little more :-/

Any advice welcome :D

I use sudocrem on their bellies to stop the midgies getting through to skin. Would work on armpits too but you would have to wash your girth a lot!! Just put a fairly decent layer on and don't rub it in.

Invest in a full body fly rug - go on ebay and search for Boett and then buy the cheaper alternative, they are really really good. Its a lot of money but well worth it, and then you spend less on creams etc.

My boy is the same. He looks deformed due to all the massive lumps all over his body, like some horrible disease despite wearing his fly rug 24/7. Also he was racing around the field in distress in the evenings and at night due to the mosquitos. Thankfully, I invested in the equitheme sweet itch rug http://www.speedgate.co.uk/ecomm/for-your-horse/horse-rugs/fly-rugs/equi-theme-sweet-itch-rug.htm

He is so much happier now. But you need a size bigger than usual as they come up small.
