Hey guys,

Just fetched Jack in from the field and he had his usual wee the minute he walks in
tongue.gif
I noticed his sheath is quite swollen so went for a closer look. Amongst the swelling are several tiny dots of blood so im assuming some flies have been bothering him (its only april fgs!)

We were planning on getting him a new fly sheet this year anyway as hes grey and terribly susceptible to them (and they stress him).

Ive just been looking at this:-

http://www.snuggyhoods.co.uk/sweet-itch/sweet-itch-rug.html

And noticed it has a cover available for erm, his manly bits
tongue.gif
Do you think this is the best option i have available to me?

Today he was out in his duo with full neck and everything and they've clearly gone for one of the few exposed bits he has

Er...the cover appears to be available for mares....covering 'manly bits' is not advisable as the results of your horse weeing could be less than pleasant.
Would it spray through the fabric or pour out the edges, I wonder?

Hahahaha

What if i KNOW he never wees in the field? You think it would be risking it too much? or do you think id be better with a standard rug and slap fly cream round the vicinity as much as possible?

His sheath looks really sore atm poor babe

I reckon it would pour through tbh

One of the Theresa's (possibly Theresa_F with Cairo?) has this problem with hers, and I think she makes her own cream for boy bits to stop the midges from eating him, so may be worth PMing her, though I haven't seen her around lately?

Failing that, possibly a layer of sudocreme?

He needs some kind of netting contraption around his willy to stop flies getting in but allow wee out? :P

I know he doesnt wee in the field though.. he cant stand the splashing so he holds it til hes in his nice clean bed ;p

I rekon it would pour through but with alot of splashing which might make the bites sting....either that or he would have to hold it in all day....I would slap some cream on him...

Hes still not out with them as i want to make sure theyre all wormed first (donks done but jack not yet due and not sure what he was done with last!).

Also want to split the winter paddock up so they can be next to each other first.

He clearly wants to be out with them though as he lingers around watching them for most of the day

I told my fiance i was going to put an icepack on jacks willy and he went mental, told me to leave it the hell alone and he'd go to a tack shop on the way home ;p He implied it would be cruel!

I thought it was a good way to make him go shop

They can but only if they arent all wormed. The donkeys have just been done with a wormer that deals with lung worm. Jack is being done in the next couple of weeks. Going to poo pick the fields too.

Its when you dont worm that its a problem. Otherwise its much like any other kind of worms.

I want to take so many piccies of the house and the donks and so on but i cant find my dongle to attach the phone to the laptop to transfer them over :/

Might try and steal my OHs iphone but parting OH from phone is like trying to get blood out of a stone

Last summer I bought a fly rug with a huge tummy flap that ended just before his sheath, and I didn't realise at first that when this pony wees, he doesn't let it 'all hang out' so to speak
smile.gif
.

So he was effectively weeing into the belly flap, I only realised when I saw him do it in the stable. Didn't affect the rug (well, it was rather smelly but I rinsed the tummy flap out quite regularly) and didn't seem to stop him weeing, or cause any problems like extra splashing. Just had to be careful not to get my fingers wet when I undid it and took it off. Yuk!

My poor boy gets this all summer

I use Nettex Itch Stop and Sudocreme. Nettex in the morning with a good dose of fly spray, sudocreme in the evening to help with the swelling.

I also feed brewers yeast which stopped the sheath swelling up and hardly any pin pricks of blood

It's the midges not the flies do this damage, and yes they are already out and about !!

I use Naf-off Deet gel on the outside of my horse's sheath & also inside the tips of his ears & it works really well.

Try the sweet itch helpline - they do (well, used to do and I can't imagine they have discontinued it) a product called Pure gold or something - basically its a thick stuff like vaseline that you can put on their boy bits and the midges can't land in the grease (or if they do they get stuck and die and can't bite through anyway). I presume vaseline would work as well.

You can mix sudocrem with it to help heal.
