FMM (aka Trinny!) You are SO what you wear

[ QUOTE ]
I would also either change your shirt or dye the one you have. Cheap Tescos yellow dusters in a hot wash with your shirt will give it an off yellowish tinge which looks better than plain white.

I had a 'play' at showing last year and didnt want to spend too much because it is not really my thing. I didnt have a shirt with a collar so bought a cheap Tesco mans shirt and cooked it with a spoonful of turmeric. 'Bobs your Uncle' - result, a nice yellow shirt.

My curry shirt caused some hilarity at the yard but the judge cant have noticed because we were 2nd.

Thanks. He is 16.2hh (the second photo is a different horse - they were bred by the same lady but are not related at all, they look so similar though) We think he is lovely and have done a few local argricultural shows with him but he never seems to do that well and we often come out of the ring wondering were it went wrong. The only thing we think it is, is that the he doesn't give the judges a good ride as he can be increadibly lazy. The other thing is that he is quite plain and he might get lost in the crowd.

The other horse went to a new rider last year and did a few small hunters and intermediate workers and did quite well I think.

Doh! I can see now they even have different markings! Interestingly, I thought in the first photo his head looked lovely - much nicer than in the second one!

Judges will not enjoy riding a lazy horse in a hunter class - they really expect them to get up and go. Does he get pulled in and then dropped down the line? If so, then you need to get him going much more off the leg, perhaps look at his feed which you can adjust to give him more energy. Basic schooling where he is asked to trot and ifhe doesn't trot on a squeeze, then immediately reinforce with your schooling whip, until he automatically responds when requested.

This is Murph Im thinking of doing WH with him this year - Ive never done any showing before so this is a GREAT post for me - what should I wear to suit him? You can do me a whole outfit - because I need to buy it all new anyway!

Thanks Fmm

Gosh - this will be fun!

Black long leather boots
Spurs
Jumping whip
Navy harnessed hat (and possibly a beagler/Patey for the flat section if the show allows it)
Brown gloves
Tweed jacket (a dark green with a contrasting stripe would look great)
Brown elastic for the number
Creamy coloured shirt
Contrasting tie - perhaps to match the stripe in the jacket
Tie pin to keep the tie puffed out nicely
Hair in a bun
Creamy/yellowy/canary jods or breeches

ok well i know you've had hundreds of replies but im just intrigued as to how you think i look with my horses!???

She has a nice head but have you got any shots of her without rugs on?
The jacket will be perfect to do SFAS classes.
At around the 16hh mark, size wise she is best to do large riding horse classes. She is a bit too small to be county hunter as they are all 16.2-17.2 in the LW classes. If she is 15.3 with shoes on, then chances are you could measure her in at 15.2 and do small hunter classes.

SFAS classes (assuming they are the same as last year) that would be open to you are:

Riding Club Show Horse
Riding Horse/Hack
Hunter

The good things about the hunter class is that it is not divided up into sizes, so height is not so important as they will possibly assume she is a small hunter anyway. However, her head looks more riding horse to me, but obviously depends on how she goes, and what the rest of her body is like.

You look really smart in both the jackets! I do like the bigger checks and it looks very nice on your chestnut. your hat doesn't look too mushroomy either - what make is it? For showing, you could do with lopping a few inches off the tail of the bay horse in the first pic!

A navy tie with dots will look smart, and you can always get some more interesting pattern if you are looking for something different. There are some great patterns out there now. Spots are fine, but you are young enough to go for something more exciting!

lol okey dokey yes! Fiddler has a very......cobby tail - it is HUGE!!!! i am not joking! so yes you're right more does need to come off his rather unruly tail

do you thinked he'd do adequate aff. workers or not? (the bay!)

its a charles owen hat - ive always liked it

Thanks. Thats really helpful. I did a few Riding Horse classes (uaffiliated local) this summer just to see how we got on we did well at the smaller shows but at Cranleigh/ Chertsey she looked tiny in comparison to everything else!! It wouldnt be difficult to measure her in at 15.2hh so I might have a bash at small hunter as you suggested. Thanks for you help!

And one last thing, can you recommend any nice jods to show in, and what colour tie would you use for the above classes with that jacket?!

Thank you very much!

aww thankyou!
grin.gif
my hat is a show jumper XP and its sooooooooo lovely and comfortable

how is Jemima?? Hattie wants to know how her partner in crime is getting on???
grin.gif

No reason at all why he shouldn't do affiliated workers. Does he event? If so, you are not allowed to do workers if you event at a certain level (but I can't remember what it is off the top of my head). He will be smaller than most of the class, but providing he jumps the course and gives the judge a good ride, it is one of the times when a smaller horse is not automatically at a disadvantage.

Jods are very personal! Some people like the Pikeur ones, I prefer the French Sportswear ones which are much thinner and a nicer colour. Just a matter of trying them one and seeing which you prefer. Although I am not keen on banana legs, I do think that a yellowy tinge looks nice. And once they are washed a few times, even the brightest jods fade pretty quickly!

Might try the two on and see which I like most - seeing as I look a numpty in most hats whatever looks best will win!
Will let you know how Jemima is tomorrow - we are Trailblazers SJ tomorrow - first time jumping a full course - should be fun

Are you taking Hattie out this weekend?

How old are you?
For 15hh workers (BSPS) you need to be under 20 years old.
If you do the intermediates (148 - 158cm) then you must be under 25 years old.

The jumps can be up to 1.15 for open intermediate classes and 1.05 for 15hh.

ooooooooo good luck this weekend then!
grin.gif
Hattie and Fiddler are both doing PC dressage on sunday so could be interesting - Fiddler's first competitive outing for 6months! and Hattie will just be trying to get a better result than last time!!!!!

The 15hh class sounds about right. Have you got a height certificate? Are you already a member of the BSPS? If you do BSPS this gives you the chance of qualifying for RIHS and HOYS. There are also the BSPS champs which have classes for amateurs, home produced, restricted, novice, open, blue riband etc etc etc.
grin.gif

nope im not a member nor does he have a height certificate - YET
wink.gif
but im wondering if this would add another string to his bow and maybe get everything sorted and have a go next year or the year after
wink.gif
?? am i right in thinking that you dont have to register with BSPS unless you qualify? and then you have 5/7days to register after qualification?
confused.gif
Does he have to have a height certificate? because its pretty pricey isnt it?
blush.gif

You need a height certificate. For this you will have to have the shoes removed which involves a visit from the farrier. Then transporting the pony to the relevant vet. The certificate costs around £65ish. You do need this before you are allowed to do the classes.

I don't "do" pony classes, so I don't know the exact rules about membership. I know with P(UK) you don't have to be a member, but I thought with the BSPS you did (although it is worth checking).

okey dokey- thats ok
wink.gif
just getting a feel for the affiliated showing world
wink.gif
grin.gif
its probably worth getting him a height certificate anyway - so i think im going to have to save up - there's no way and rightly so that my parents will pay for it!!!!!!!
