he's got to be sedated for around 2 hours while they do it...hows momma going to react I feel sick with worry now.....any advice or info please

Don't worry its actually quite a routine procedure. I'm surprised your foal will be sedated though, it is usually not necessary. They can be restrained quite easily without sedating them- check with your vets beforehand.

Hi,

Try not to worry, my foal had to have this done as she never fed well. We sedated mum so she would stand quietly and i sat on top of foal whilst it went in.

My filly or mare were not traumatised at all by it. My filly is now 5 weeks old, and apart from having surgery on her front right leg last wednesday to straighten it she is absolutely perfect.

The only real thing to worry about is the cost!! My vet said it was expensive stuff, I didn't realise how expensive until my bill came in, it cost me £250 just for the plasma!!!!!

Best wishes for tomorrow

I think mum would kill me if I tried to keep a hold of her baby for 2 hours...

We had to help with a plasma transfusion a few years ago with a friends horse and the foal wasn't sedated, as jenvet said we restrained her quite easily all went well and she has grown into a fine young filly, she is now 3 and just been broken all that early handling really helped with her. I'm sure it will be fine.

Booked in to be done tomorrow at 9:30 so will probably see whats gonna happen to the little man...

awww, is that the little chap that you posted after was born the other day? No advice or info as i know nowt about foalies, but ((((Vibes)))) for the little man, and hugs for you, fingers crossed that he'll be okay

My baby had this, her mum, like your mare, ran milk for 2 days before foaling. Mum was sedated and we just sat on Muppet (middle girlie in my sig) - it didn't take 2 hours though, can't remember exactly, but thought it only took about 10 minutes - this was seven years ago though! I am glad that I had it done, Mum came down with a uterus infection the day after, and I dread to think what would have happened if Muppet had impaired immunity with all the gunk around.

Best of luck for the morning, sure things will be fine.

Didn't have to sedate the foal and he just stood and we held him whilst the drip went in, he had to be infused very slowly (cat pace), took ages and found out all about vet's personal life. I didn't have a mother to contend with though as he was an orphan - now a strapping big horse.

Hope it went well. We sedate as routine so that we have no foal wandering about issues to contend with, this year the vet tied the plasma to a roof truss and foal slept happily away.

I have had a maiden scatty mare sedated for everyone's safety too.
