follow on from livery yard rules

Got another!

On seeing me heading into the field with barrow and rubber gloves: 'Oh, you're doing it "properly" then?' .... yes? I don't want my field to get in the same state as yours! (not really a livery yard so no one there to make rules about poo-picking) This was swiftly followed by 'how long do you think you'll be able to keep that up?' *contemptuous chuckle*

I wasnt allowed to put hay in the field for my two over the winter.. as the horses in the field next door would get jealous!!

I'm on a private yard, so thankfully none of this happens (though I occasionally get the odd comment from the owner about why I'm feeding the pony or putting a rug on him), but I've had a few stupid things said to me by 'horsey' people. I was out hacking a few days ago, a couple of youngish girls rode up to me on their horses, and one said to the other 'does she never bother washing her pony? He's filthy'. My pony is a leopard spot appaloosa and the 'filth' was just his spots!

I got sent this photo with an accompanying "Hahahahahahahahahahaha"

Had several messages saying folk believed my mare was dying as she was laid flat out and making a awful noise - she snores rather loudly but not quite a death rattle :)

Ha! I used to get exactly the same thing with my old mare!!

There was an absolute witch who used to be on our yard. She asked me not to groom my horses in my field in case they had mites and the wind blew the hair into her field and her horse might catch my horses hypothetical mites! She also told me it was my fault when my first horse died of grass sickness as I'd had him gelded. Oh, and my elderly retired mare should be shot because she was 'good for nothing - you don't even ride her'! Oh, also she said that I should take my hand reared horse in a stable with a whip for half an hour to teach him some manners because he stole her baseball cap off her head. Apparently she did that with her horse when she first had her and the horse never put a foot wrong afterward (that's because she could never catch it).

"look at you with all your fancy side-ways *****e!" Shoulder in was apparently unheard of st that yard and the other liveries were mind blown at the idea of incorporating lateral work into every day schooling and jumping sessions. Followed by numerous requests to teach kids on the yard to leg yield "can you show me how to make my pony go sideways?" And parents asking "can you show feeling x to do that thing they do in dressage, x says you do it too!".

I offered to ride out another livery's horse and was told not to mount from the ground under an circumstances but was given a very specific route that meant using 3 gates that had to be opened on foot (kick latches at the bottoms). On pointing this out I was told I should just wait for a passer by and get a leg up!?! Are people for real?

One yard where we kept our mare I would turn up to find 3 thick rugs had been put on the night before, i know she was clipped but she didnt need 3 on, same yard kept turning her out in her stable quilt when I asked yo why this kept happening she just said that the staff were very busy and probably just didn't notice ! Something very odd went on with my rugs at that place.

Not a livery but I once got a cheeky comment from a race yard owner. I was out hacking a friends horse, when they pulled up alongside and said " You'd never get a job working for me, those boots are on backwards".

I pointed out that the velcro closure straps could never point back on this style of boots, unless you put them on backwards!

Aren't they on upside down? Or am I missing something?

Not a fellow livery but a passer by called into the yard to alert us that a couple of horses were lying flat out (in the sunshine) in the field. My father said "Oh they're just enjoying a sleep in the sunshine" to which the lady looked at her watch and said "What at this time of day? I thought they'd be up by now"!

this made me giggle

Well, I never knew such a thing existed!

They are Westropps, and I couldn't recommend them more. My mare just couldn't keep ordinary knee boots on, one canter and they were down around her ankles (and yes, I do know how to fit them properly!) but these were fantastic. Even if we went wading in the lake or splashed through muddy puddles they always stayed done up and in place. You can also use them in conjunction with a pair of overreach boots in lieu of travelling boots. Chuck them in the washing machine and the come out as good as new. Oh, and they last years too barring disaster.

Ive had several over the years-

* Shes been lying down flat out for 4 hours now- we think she might be dead
I asked if they had been over to check.....
*No as she might be dead
Shock horror she wasnt

*She was jogging on route to the field so we put her back in her stable for the day
Really???

*She got loose and ran around- i think only senior staff can handle her*
Turns out one groom let go of her and she continued to walk to the field with stable mate.......

*Do you know how dangerous it is riding in a standing martingale? They are only for standing in, you should have a running........

The list goes on...........

All I can say is that I'm so pleased I have always kept my horses at my own place so I don't have to put up with other people and their shoddy opinions!

Don't you get the kindly people saying 'Your pony needs a rug in this snow' ?(A NF, who doesn't need a rug, the snow lays along the top of his mane and he's toasty warm underneath it)
They're the same people who ask of the 25 year old 13.2 ex show pony 'Will he get as big as the other one when he grows up?'
