Do you prefer mares or geldings (or stallions

) or don't you mind? Why?

Personally prefer mares, I think they are more "1 person" horses, and once you've got a mare's trust, they'll do anything... plus I like a bit of attitude

But when looking to buy, I wouldn't rule out a gelding at all. What about you then??

Mares at the moment, because they don't rock the boat at home. The stallion doesn't like geldings, and it just causes logistical problems.

Generally, if a horse does the job then I don't care whether it is a he, a she, or pink with purple spots.

i voted mares as just always seem to end up with one so its what i'm used to but doesn't really bother me either way. if a nice gelding came along so beit.

I really don't mind. I have 2 mares at the moment and they are both brilliant horses. They are not the most affectionate horse i have ever met though. In my experience Geldings seem to be more affectionate. But that could just be me. lol

I don't mind. I have had some awkward mares, some lovely geldings and my current horse is a mare who I just adore - she is so straightforward and genuine and has given me back the confidence my previous gelding managed to shake (through no fault of his own though; due to a medical condition that took a while to diagnose which made him very unreliable).

If I ever looked for a horse again I wouldnt have a gender preference - it just has to be suitable for the job

I`ve always had mares just because when i`ve been lookiing i`ve never found a gelding i like enough to buy. I do think mares will "give that bit more" though when you have a good relationship

If i found a gelding i liked though it wouoldnt put me off buying at all

I've had both mare's and a gelding. I found the mares to be a bit stroppy and my gelding was laid back. So geldings for me. although saying that i would buy another mare so........

I've always had geldings but I have a mare now. I now know what people mean when they say 'you can tell a gelding but you have to ask a mare!'
I always seemed to get on better with geldings and never wanted a mare but I love the one I've got because I've had her since she was a foal. I've built up such a relationship with her over the years that now that I've come to ride her I find her mareish moods amusing!

I prefer geldings they always seem to have more character and they don't get hormonal, but then you can't do anything with them if they break but you always have the option to breed from mares i suppose

i think my geldings are more affectionate too. ive had affectionate mares, yes, but my guys are like big dogs.

my fave 2 are my o.a.p. gelding and my 4 year old gelding,

As on the other post, i have a preference for mares

Owned a stallion, geldings and mostly mares and just had a real love for mares, even though the geldings were very sweet and the stallion was a star

Always geldings for us really. I don't think after having all the geldings we've had I could put up with mares' seasonal behaviour. We had to stick with geldings as we had an old rescue horse years ago who would attack mares but was fine with geldings and, since then we've had a couple of riggy geldings so having a mare would have just caused severe problems.

I can see why people do like mares but I like the general more easy-going, less quirky geldings! I've had my share of 'quirky' geldings don't get me wrong (still have one) i just think mares have a little more intelligence and I don't want a horse outdoing me intellectually! ha ha

Always prefer mares - the geldings I have owned, while they are good rides, and affectionate etc etc - they don't have the "edge" that mares do - probably something to do with half their brain being removed at a young age!!!

I have always achieved much more with mares, and much more enjoy working with them. Working with geldings I generally find much harder work, and usually have to repeat myself over and over and over again - where as my mares have always been really quick witted, and pick up instructions quickly!!! (my horses ALL understand me exactly when I talk to them!!!

I have always got on well with all sexes, have known some cracking mares, stallions and geldings but equally known difficult ones. I have always prefered geldings over anything else.

either or for me!
i don't mind having boys or girls are have had some very temperamental geldings and some very laidback mares.

Mares mares mares, although for a fantastic gelding, I would have one.

Depends what for. I love a real gent for hunting and would maybe prefer a consistent gelding for a kids pony, but I agree if you can get a bond with a mare then you won't forget it and easy to fall in love with the character. But all IMO, and I know I'm generalising.

I have two geldings and one Chestnut mare and I honestly could not tell you which I prefer. They are all unique and all totally different in build or personality but all whinney at me, and usually walk upto me in the field. I have now learnt to judge the "horse" rather than the "sterio type". eg I have a full thorougbred ex race horse - he is the most chilled laid back well behaved animal you could wish to meet. I have a chestnut mare - who is so willing and friendly and so un-marish its unture.

i have a mare and i prefer them because they are just more... marish lol!. They are cheekier and more intelligent- although i love geldings too. I think it depends on the horse though.

Geldings, with two hormonal daughters and a hormonal wife, the last thing I need is a hormonal horse/pony, but some mares are lovely.
