Following on from _MizElz_ post

Signed, I hate hacking on the roads these days, although..... the tractor and lorry drivers round here are brilliant, the folks from the new housing estates aren't - say no more, might be nice if you could download the poster, then you could run off as many as you like.

I work for an online equestrian company so I can so something on there or even have a link that other people that might not come on here can print off.
Our local paper has it's offices opposite us so I can go and harass them to do an article and part of my horsey family work for BP. There is also a driving test centre next door so they can be in on it. I have 2 close friends, one in the fire brigade and the other a copper, hmm, I might bug them to.

As it's past my bed time (i'll be tired and ratty tomorrow :D) I haven't read the whole thing so sorry if my idea is a duplicate of someone else's. Think the poster idea is a good one!

What about groups of local horse owners/riding schools etc getting together and asking their councils to put signs up showing how to safely pass horse and rider in hacking hotspots/problem areas?

Anything that educates drivers and makes hacking safer is a good thing in my eyes!

I am also up for signing it - the way some road users treat riders is appauling! I was out for a hack on my nervous 5yo the other day with steady nanny horse. Both riders wearing fluorescent, nanny horse on road side. Driver approaching FAR too fast. Rider of nanny horse signalled for him to slow down, he ignored her and blasted past giving us the finger. What a charmer :mad:

It does make you wonder how some people managed to pass their tests.
Also i think that a lot of people just see us as stuck up toffs on horse back, ordering them around, so this myth needs redressing as well .

Not meaning to sound totally dim, but can someone put the link from MizElz's post up so I can see what this was originally about. Thanks.

Just a thought - my daughter took her test in December last year and 'taught' her instructor the safe way to overtake a horse and rider. He was surprised at what she had to say (she can be very 'forthright'') and promised to incorporate it into future lessons for other learners. Would it be possible to see if people could 'get permission to go into' the driving schools local to them and instruct the instructors. After all there are a lot of town and city driving schools who never go near a horse and rider during their lessons. Perhaps going onto DirectGov and lobbying for it to be part of the instruction would be useful - perhaps we could get a petition going on there.
