...I was seriously considering having Indie cremated when the time comes as I don't want any more graves in the garden. I was going to have it done so I could have her individual ashes back but the horrible story of the dumped dogs puts me off. How do we know that they are really cremated on their own or be sure what they get back is their dog?
I know it's daft but I've got a thing about animals dignity even after they're dead and the thought of her being thrown about then lumped in with all the unwanted strays and me getting back god knows what makes me think again.
Has anyone good or bad experiences of having pets cremated?

Nanci was the first dog we had cremated because our last vet was a long-term family friend and he very kindly took all our dogs back to his farm for burial.
N was just such a big girl and our land is totally unsuitable for burial. We did not ask for her ashes back a)because of the cost and b) I've always been a bit concerned about what you would get back, it could be anything.

Sorry if that upsets anyone who has had ashes returned, but those are my feelings.
I have similar feelings about human deaths - once the spirit is gone, all that is left is a shell and as long as the body is disposed of properly and with dignity, I don't really need any more reassurance than that.
From my dogs I have photos and wonderful memories, old collars and tags, that is all I need.

We got Windsor cremated and paid extra to have his done individually which was signed off and a certificate to prove that is what happened. I can't remember how much we paid.

Ashes were returned in a lovely wooden box with a space for a picture on the front and a lovely wee label saying Windsor. The actual ashes were inside like a linen bag inside the box. We scattered them over the first place he went duck shooting

We had our last vizz individualy cremated and I'm confident it is her and only her in the box returned to us. We did take her to the crematorium ourselves and although obviously not a pleasant experience they were absolutely wonderful there. Very understanding, helpful and keen for us to see the place as they cremate in individual trays...they offered to take us to see all that but I wouldn't go as it was too upsetting a few hours after she had died. They lay the dog in a sort of chapel of rest and let you take your time to say goodbye. We left her there in her bed with her blanket and favourite toy etc. All this was returned to us when we went back a few days later to collect the ashes. I honestly couldn't recommend this firm enough and they made an extremely difficult time alot easier for us.

I had my last dog cremated and had her ashes back, i know the people who did this so know i only have her the box. I will be buying a minuture weeping willow and putting her ashes in the pot, so that she will always be with me were ver i move too!!

I know 100% that my pet crem does, because when I got my little whippey back I was transerring her ashes to the same box as my male whippey I had lost a few years earlier......and there was lots of little nuts and bolts in there

this was from her leg when it was pinned and fixated, I could not ask for better proof

Much the same as with humans you can lay them out on their bed or a blanket on the tray and you can even stay for the process if you want.
Most places aim to do right by you. Just the odd one that doesn't.

Only you would sift through the ashes to check

Thanks everyone, I think that's the route i'll go down. The thought of her being left to rot in a field like those others makes me feel ill but if you can take them there yourself and be with them that makes me feel better..ish

I got very emotional when I found those little nuts and bolds

I always take mine and lay them in the little chapel, I dont like the thought of them being in the freezer then chucked in the pet crem lorry.

Me neither...I've seen them being chucked in that freezer.

I would'nt leave her at the vets, I think they thought we were very odd insisting to take her for cremation ourselves. We didn't even know where we were going to go with her and it was a weekend. The people I mentioned above truely were amazing though. I remember her curled up in her bed in the chapel, and its a very peaceful last memory of her. I also feel confident the staff there handled her with dignity and respect....I'm funny about that sort of thing!

Yes I'm going to do the same thing. Daft isn't it because I know it makes no difference to her but I hate the thought of her being frozen
