Have not got an ex racer ( to my knowlegde, although I do own a TB)

I have a friend who has got an ex racer this year, who has won a couple of races last year but because of injury, .... was given him, lucky thing, he is just lovely

Business associate owned some racehorses. He put me in in touch with his trainer in Newmarket when we were looking. Picked up the first one in 2002, and the 2nd in 2003 from the same yard. Paid nothing for either. Trainer owned the 1st, owners of the 2nd were happy to give him a good home. The comment was "we only wish we could find homes for all of them".

We were very lucky with our two.

My friend has one and paid £1000 for him (possibly a bit less - I can't remember). I know a couple of people that work in epsom so we hear about the horses through them. I will be on the look out for one in the new year and have already had various ones pointed out to me, not sure how much they will be though.

I bought the two geldings at Ascot sales- neither just out of training and paid stupidly small amounts for them. Bought the mare (for an exorbitant £20) from a friend who had been given her by the trainer (we both knew that I had fallen in love with her).

got mine off a friend for £1500, had previously loaned him doing lots of work with him. they got him from a field in herefordshire. him and another and they paid £1500 for the pair. they had both come over from ireland.

we sold one last year for £500, absolutly nothing wrong, perfect gentleman with a fab charactor. No-one wanted him as he was an ex-racer, struggled to sell hima t that price. Lady who has him(really nasty accident years back, confidence shattered) totally loves him and has gotten so much confidence from him and doing so much more than she ever thought she'd do. People have a real issue with ex-racers thinking them to be wound up crazy idiots. Really unfair for the majority of them!

Totally! I took two of mine (me and BF riding) to the woods on Sunday with my friend and her "friend" and they were both very careful about asking if we were ok for a canter, asking if we wanted to in front or behind, what would happen if they came too close etc.. Seemed very surprised when we "managed" to stay in control the whole time- they seemed to think that all racehorse training is done at a flat out uncontrollable gallop!

They don't realise that a racehorse has to do an awful lot of work at a hand canter, staying behind or next to other horses and come back to you when you ask. Bless em

I havent got one YET...but I have fillled in applications for ex racers at Darley Rehoming, Heroes and another i forget the name of....and i have just got in contact with a few local trainers to see if they had any and i'm in luck and going to see one tomorrow. I quite like the idea of going through a trainer as a lot of them are pleased their horse is potentially going to a good home and they can fill you in on their history and tend to tell you the whole truth...injuries and all. All that I have contacted have been really helpful.

I found the same. The trainer of ours told us exactly what the deal was.

Horse 1 was bought at Doncaster Breeze up sales by the trainer. When he started training him he realised he had wear & tear on his knees. He had turned him away for 6 months before we took him on.

Horse 2 - too slow. He also volunteered that he had suffered a fractured cannon which had subsequently healed.

He gave us a synopsis of each horse's behaviour aside from racing, and was absolutely spot on with both. I called him after taking on each of them with a couple of queries, and he couldn't have been more helpful when calling back. He delivered the 1st horse personally whilst on the the way to the races with another horse.

Mine was free! I got him from a private home (he'd previously flat raced) but he failed the vet (bone spavin) and they offered him to me free and I jumped at the chance!
