Ok, so I've just got home from a long day at the vets for an Mri scan on my pony who is bilateral lame in front. You can only see the lameness in trot on the lunge on a firm surface.
The scan seems fairly good with no obvious issues although the specialist still needs to take a look.

The vet mentioned it could just be general foot pain although after 7 hours of hanging about I may have heard that wrong.

Has anyone heard of this? I would have thought that foot pain has to have an obvious area of injury or stress.

I guess i'll have a better understanding when the vet rings tomorrow but i'm just a bit frustrated that I still have no conclusive diagnosis. Although relieved there is nothing horrendously bad going on as far as we can see.

My boy was diagnosed with foot pain after MRI in 2011 with his previous owner. I've always treated him as being early stage navicular but just today we had vet out and have found an old deep seated abscess behind the hoof wall.

All the best for your horse

Yeah the general diagnosis for deans was 'caudal foot pain' just basically because his feet were at the wrong angle. I think early stage navicular is a fairly good way to think about it- heading in that direction if nothing is done. Hope you get more info after you speak to the vet.

Can it still be navicular type pain if all those areas on both xray and Mri are all clear with no changes?

I don't know. Deans had no changes either. To my way of thinking I'd caught it before the changes happened. Not sure that's right tho its just the way I thought about it.
