Well the temperatures have risen to -7 now and seems that they will be around -5 to -10 for the next week, so it's mild enough for my dogs to be spayed now. So today, off I popped with my big dogs to get them weighed at the vets and booked in for their spays. Lily, the little Springer who had the puppies back in December was booked in too but the vet already had her weight.

So I take my giant puppy Clover and have her weighed and she is being done this week. Lily is booked in for next week and Snowdrop (Lily's puppy we kept) will be going in 4 months to be done.

But hark I hear you say! What about Daisy the delightful black shepherd dog? Weeeellllllll, I have delayed her spaying as I think she is looking slightly round......the same friggin' dog was spotted in my area recently and although I haven't seen him here, I didn't blooming well see him the last time either! I think the little bugger has HAD one of my other girls!

If Daisy comes back into season soon then she will be whipped down to the vet - vet has said she will squeeze her in at short notice. The vet is miffed with this dog. I feel like catching him, taking him on a short overnight trip and then sending him home ball-less!

I hope Daisy isn't preggers but if she is then it isn't the end of the world; I'll keep one of course and I know fine well there are loads of people who adore Daisy also so shouldn't be difficult at all to find homes for the puppies with my friends, especially as some of them missed out on Lily pups.

My vet thinks that there must be some bizarre psychic thing going on with this dog - every time I go in to book my bitches to be spayed, he comes and has his wicked way with them!

OK - but I have had bitches and dogs for many years. I have lived on farms and yards and in towns.

Not once have I had an unwanted pregnancy in any of my bitches. If you really don't want it to happen it doesn't happen. Just like human pregnancy - there are precautions that are mostly effective. Like keeping your breeding bitches enclosed, especially when in season. If they're not breeding bitches they should be enclosed until spayed and they should be spayed as soon as possible. Any dogs not required for breeding should also be castrated as soon as possible, but you are not responsible for the rogue lovemutt that is wandering, so you must take even more responsibility for your girls.

Your vet should be able to tell whether or not Daisy is pregnant and how far on. If it's early it can be terminated, and she can be spayed so there aren't anymore unplanned or unwanted puppies.

I'm glad you have friends that will take any puppies, but I know you agree that it's not an ideal situation.

Good luck - I hope she's alright...!!

LOL!! I have 2 guns!

Nah, he's a really cute little dog actually - I just wish he would bugger off back to where he belongs because he doesn't belong, or live, anywhere near here. Gah! I only have a window of about a month in the Spring and a month in the Fall to get the dogs spayed and he keeps foiling that!

I have no closed in areas for my dogs. They have free run of the farm at all times, day and night. My dogs would never go off their property....unlike Cassanova. Good job he only comes here for sex and not for a fight, otherwise his life would be very short-lived. The reason he ended up on my farm the first time was because a neighbour was obviously peed off with him and was shooting at him!

Vet couldn't confirm whether Daisy is pregnant or not, will be taking her in next week again to see whether she is. If she is, no I would not have them aborted, if she isn't then she will be spayed as soon as possible.

No it is not ideal, but it's also not a big deal either. I like having lots of dogs around and if for some reason some homes couldn't be found for the puppies then I'd keep them.

there is no need to let her go through with this litter - it is perfectly possible to operate to remove the litter and spay at the same time.

I also would agree that it is irresposible to allow your dogs to have pups that are unplanned and whose parents are unhealth tested - Daisy is a Malinois - NOT a breed for the faint hearted and certainly not one to mix with a dog of unknown temperament (working bred Malinois can be VERY sharp and highly reactive and even if your Daisy does not show this trait genetically there is strong possibility that her pups will )

I agree. My little dog went in to be spayed a couple of days ago and the 2 big dogs (Clover & Daisy) are being spayed next week. Lily (little dog) was not pregnant so highly unlikely that Daisy is either
