Never thought about it before. Now that I have thought about it, I realise that no there isn't an amount of money! If we absolutely had no choice, unable to take care of her then I guess we'd have to face her moving on (ideally within our social network) but other than that I couldn't stand to send her off and not know if she was safe.

No amount of money, but I am not in a position where I am desperate for money, that might sway some people.

Fwiw if anything happened to Mr StR I would rehome two of his dogs in a heartbeat (to @Clodagh 😊 she would have a use for them), but that wouldn’t be money related, it would be to make the dogs happy. I might rehome a third one too, but would keep the elderly lab.

Never, no matter how broke I was , they would only be rehomed if I had popped my clogs and that is already organised. Hope it doesn’t happen 🤞

No. They would have gone back to their breeder in case of any irreconcilable incompatibility/unsuitability, not sold on, and will go back if anything happens to me. I have sometimes wondered how those who bring on and sell part trained dogs for work/sport do it.

Never sold a horse either - my childhood pony is still at home.

Ours, absolutely no money in the world would be enough.

We have talked about if something were to happen to the both of us at once. Odin and Toby would go back to the rescue they came from, Luna would go to friends who we met through the rescue.

Bo would go to Clodagh on here. I am not sure she would keep him, but I would trust her explicitly to find him the perfect home.

Loki absolutely not, never.

The spaniel, I could be tempted if it was 200% the right home but it wouldn’t be about the money. I feel really guilty even writing that 🙈

My reason for posting is there is an account on Tiktok that comes up occasionally where some bloke approaches random people asking to buy their dog and offering thousands of pounds.

All very staged seemingly, but it did get me thinking how many people would happily let their dog go off to an uncertain future for the sake of £££.

I find the videos quite uncomfortable. If someone approached me on the street asking to buy my dog, I would feel very threatened by this unhealthy interest in my pet.

Would you sell your dog if a stranger offered you enough money?

Or is there no amount of money that would ever see you part with your dog.

No . It happened to me back in the 70s , I had a Gsd who I adored who was fairly successful in the show ring and an Australian breeder who was over here looking to buy stock asked me to name my price . A lot of people thought I was crazy to turn him down, including my then boyfriend who sold his champion female to the same guy .

People keep dogs for different reasons I suppose.
I know (in the working world) there are people who breed, train and sell dogs regularly. The dogs aren’t badly kept or treated but it’s purely business. I definitely couldn’t do it though.
My husband has sold part trained and trained dogs (who won’t suit his working environment or style) in the past and has also found good retirement homes for working dogs who aren’t ready to retire but who need an easier environment to work in (lowland and fields as oppose to hill work for example). I can categorically state he doesn’t find it easy and the older he has got the more he struggles with it. Sometimes it’s just in the best interests of the dog.

I was offered 15k for my youngest last week. It was his opening offer and he would have gone to 75k apparently. I had to walk away very quickly as that amount of money would be life changing for me, and Cooper would love a lot of the life style offered. It was a traveller gentleman I know in passing. When I asked other people about it, they bet big money on racing/hunting dogs and he'd have made his money back in one night.

instead, the daft sod stayed with me and is currently reclining on my bed without a care in the world I have many cares all of which would have been resolved with a70k cash injection

Obviously dogs and horses are slightly different, as one is more traditionally sold than the other (although I have never sold a horse on), but albeit Dex is my absolute horse of a lifetime and I am utterly in love with him, if someone was at my door with £250k, I would have to really sit and consider it... An amount that would set me up for the rest of my life, or at least allow me to be mortgage free, I would be a fool not to consider.

It will never happen and he won't ever be worth it, but I do genuinely think there is a price on most things... if someone offered £10m to most normal people for most things, then they would at least take a moment to think.

Absolutely not! Not to say I judge those who's dogs are for a job and they'd be better elsewhere maybe.

My dog's only job is Pet and I could never ever part with her. She's my wee bestie. Also, if anyone offered a decent price I'd wonder what was wrong with them to spend thousands on a spayed non designer cross breed.

Depends on the dog. There have been dogs I wouldn't part with and dogs I would have.
I do move in circles where it's not unusual.

A family friend (who did not need the money) was offered a suitcase full of cash (five figures, so life-changing for some) for a dog, refused, and the dog was dead less than a year later.
And I do know people who have accepted life-changing amounts for a good dog.
