With my last GSD I was at a competition, filling in a team at a level above where we really were, came last but got given a special prize from the judge and steward for both being happy and trying. A serious competitor offered a huge amount of money for the dog. She came home with us and we went on living on baked beans and milk tokens.

No amount of money would have induced me to sell Sasha. We "rescued" her aged 10 months and had her for 13 years. RIP my beautiful girl.

It was a traveller gentleman I know in passing. When I asked other people about it, they bet big money on racing/hunting dogs and he'd have made his money back in one night.
That is a hell of a lot of money and really surprised a traveller (even one you know and possibly feel you can trust) would offer anything beyond a generous offer! They usually just steal dogs that they take a fancy to. Sorry if that offends anyone but it is a sad fact of life these days with most I know of. I would keep a very close eye on him I'm Dun.

I've been offered money by travellers for a JRT dog and also for a very big skewbald stallion I brought over here back in the day, but it was very much an opening ruse to find out more about the animals and my property. I politely declined the 'offer' and we ramped up security overnight and it is still at that level to this day now we are wiser.😉

These are settled travellers. They seem to pay stupid money for everything, I think its a combination of money laundering and status with them. I hear several times a day how much they paid for this, that and the other. Its a very odd situation Ive found myself in, but I have protection from one of the big families who I do all their reading and writing for. I'm seen as a valuable commodity. I do keep a very close eye on both of them though, as I'm very aware the next person who sees him might not know and could just take him if they get the chance.

Honestly, one day I'll write a book about this fiasco1

People keep dogs for different reasons I suppose.
I know (in the working world) there are people who breed, train and sell dogs regularly. The dogs aren’t badly kept or treated but it’s purely business. I definitely couldn’t do it though.

I understand completely why people do it but I don’t think I could personally put that much time into a dog without becoming too emotionally attached. My youngest is, technically, unsuitable for the role she was sought for and she’s still here. 😅

Going back to the OP’s post, in the circles I move in if someone is that interested they’d be asking about breeding plans or looking to buy from similar lines, not making an offer on the actual dog. My eldest came about because I’d seen a certain dog competing, many years before he came along, expressed an interest and waited.

Well as she's currently going through a 9 month old bratty phase then I'd maybe think about it.... but seriously no, i'd never sell any of my pets. They're all here until the end :)

Its like people who look after young guide dog puppies. They have them as part of the family for a year or whatever, to then have to give the dog away.

I get that someone has to do it, but my goodness, I cannot comprehend how much that would hurt having to say goodbye.
I'm sure it wouldn't be easy to give them up but I think it's different if you go into it knowing that you will be giving the dog up at some point in the future.

I no longer have my own dog but, via borrowmydoggy.com, I have dogs at my home four days a week and they stay with me regularly when their owners are on holiday. I love them all and enjoy spending time with them but they aren't my dogs. I'd be disappointed if I was unable to see any of them again but it wouldn't be like losing one of my own.

I would have
As of right now......I'd pay them to take the puppy 🤣😉
ditto for two of mine. They would be returned in the warranty period though I’m sure.

I often used to have a lot of travellers offer me outrageous sums for using at stud or, when this was declined, buying outright of my blue Merle smooth bred rough collie. Once even rose to a five figure sum when it was observed he had a wall eye, though they called it a moon eye.

I may sell depending on how much they offer and which dog they want👿

It would need to be a life changing amount of money, to buy a house with a big garden backing onto open countryside in the Cotswolds 😃

But nobody would want mine. Lola is daft, Bonnie is a barker & moody and Betty is getting old like her owner😊

Cece- Not a hope, the other depends on what’s on offer…. *joking

When I was younger, late teens I was offered several times to name my price for my pony. He was in his late teens too but this guy was desperate to buy.
It never crossed my mind to say yes, I adored him. I did always wonder what kind of money he was thinking though 🤣

A definite no from me. I've also never sold a horse. I think it makes a difference how you see your animals. Mine are family, but if they were here to do a job and not as a pet, it might make a difference .

Some people move dogs on before they get too attached if they don't gel or the dog isn't what they want. Some people raise and train dogs for a living. Some people would prefer to get an older dog with health tests done rather than go through raising a puppy, getting attached, then finding out that the health isn't good or the dog isn't their type of dog. It's actually my preference. Most of my dogs have been second hand. So I'm glad others are prepared to move dogs on.
I was joking with the guy I got my old dog off last week and he said he couldn't have coped with his crazy.

Eight years ago a guy in my sport had qualified to compete for his country at the worlds, his home country was hosting, but was selected to do the decoy work so did that instead. He sold the dog to America where the new owner competed it and also made National championships, the world team, top 20 place. She just won the world championships with the son of that dog yesterday, that she bred, trained and handled herself. The guy who she bought the dog off was the decoy again.
I bet he doesn't regret selling the father, who's to say he would have had the same sort of life, but was able to be involved in his career, training and legacy.

Honey not for any amount of money, the boy well i'd probably have to pay someone to take him 😂 If circumstances changed and I thought someone could give him a better home than me I would actually consider it but very unlikely.

I came very close to bankruptcy a few years ago. It was pointed out to me by a debt charity that the sensible thing to do would be to give up my dogs and horses as they accounted for a large part of my monthly income. I decided that the sensible thing to do was to live on porridge and water, not turn the heating on and remortgage with an exorbitant interest rate mortgage company who specialised in loaning to the desperate. So no, I wouldn't sell them for any amount of money. Although as per some other comments, the malamute would probably be returned pretty sharpish anyway... :D

My family aren't local (folks are in Spain half the year!) and my circle of friends is very small.

I couldn't part with my animals - they're my family and I really depend on them being around. Even on the bad days there's not a sum that would change my mind.

Bit dramatic maybe, but I felt a connection with each of them when I met them and can't bear the thought of it. If I had a horse or dog that I never intended to keep then I don't think I'd have too much of an issue if the price was right.

I can’t even sell a toaster but doubt anyone would be interested in my little princess. She’s got no recall is a thief and shouts at me! Love her to bits the crazy beast!
