So how do you manage ?Never been without animals, always had a menagerie, I'd be more likely to NOT manage if I gave up the animals. It's hard, because I work a full-time 40+ hour week, plus part time a couple of evenings a week as well (although fortunately the part-time work is pretty flexible), but I've never had it any other way. Don't have much time spare for a social life. Don't have any money spare for holidays/nice cars/life's little luxuries etc, but would rather have the horses anyway.
Costs, Time and why the need for so many ?
Costs: In my case considerably cheaper than on a livery yard - I am fortunate in that I rent my own grazing and keeping all 5 of mine costs about the same as it would to keep 2 at any of the local DIY livery yards.
Time: In the winter I only get to ride at weekends, but it's actually quite nice to let the boys wind down a bit after a busy competitive summer - and for me to wind down too. Even without riding, I still spend at least an hour a day with them, feeding, haying, doing various bits and bobs. No mucking out fortunately, as all 5 live out 24/7/365 - which has the advantage that I actually don't need to worry about them not getting any exercise if I can't ride/work them on a particular day.
Why the need for so many?
I have my own 2 endurance horses to ride. 3rd "ridden" horse is my partner's horse, however partner's back's been too bad to ride anything but occasionally over the last couple of years, so I've taken over riding his horse too. The 4th horse is a 30 year old mare, completely retired. I promised her a forever home when she was given to me 11/12 years ago now, and that's what she's got. 5th horse is a broodmare - currently not in or with foal, but one day in the future, when the time is right, I hope to breed a foal from her (a foal for me to keep - not to sell) - in order to fulfil a dream I've always had of breedng a foal of my very own.
It's not easy, I have hardly any free time, I'm always skint - but I wouldn't have it any other way (except perhaps being able to work quite a few less hours per week!)
Are all the horses that you have in work ?
No, see above.
Those with loads are they kept on your own place ?
If you mean "own place" as in rented, then yes. I certainly couldn't either afford for them to go to a livery yard, nor could I cope on a livery yard either.
We have 2 but time management is fairly easy because 1 is a tb who is easy peasy to get fit and both are fantastic as they can be left in the field without being ridden for 2 weeks and be exactly the same as they are when being ridden everyday!!
I have 2, one pony who's 18 so not in much work and a horse who's only 5 so he's in full time work. I'm also doing my A levels in school-I have no idea how I manage it!!!! Takes up a lot of time and MONEY!!
