..and i really liked him. (No pics atm- can't find the camera cable
crazy.gif
)
He is a 15.2 7yo, very very good looking, sooo sweet (they think he may have been hand-reared, as he is incredibly friendly with humans- he follows the girl round with no headcollar on!
grin.gif
) with a big white star (yesss- all i've had so far have been boring old dark bays with no white markings!
cool.gif
). He was bred to race, but wasn't fast enough, so hacked out with the trainer's mum for a couple of years, then came to the seller last year to be brought on as an allrounder, and learn to jump etc. Since being with her he has done mainly BSJA, a couple of ODEs, and some unaff XC and dressage.
As a result of only doing serious schooling for nine months or so, though, he is still quite green on the flat- he has very nice paces, and naturally carries himself fairly well, but finds it hard to come into an outline- he works through from behind, but his head is so high that it all goes out the front door if that makes sense?
confused.gif
it wasn't just me who found it difficult- v experienced friend also had a sit on and, although she did a lot better than me (
smirk.gif
not difficult) confirmed that she found it difficult to ask him flex properly and bring his head down. The girl who 'showed him off' and rode first (the seller's friend- seller broken wrist) was a fab rider, and had a very powerful seat, and long legs, neither of which i have
smirk.gif
and he went well for her. But what did stand out was that he just has the most fantastic attitude- he genuinely wants to oblige, and he listens, and even when asked for something he wasn't completely sure about such as some basic lateral work, he tried his hardest and got it pretty much right anyway.
smile.gif

And he has a great jump- the seller's friend took him over a cross pole, an oxer with fillers, a triple bar and a fairly large vertical- she told us she was not the most confident jumper as she mainly does dressage, and on the one or two occasions when she and i both accidently got in a bit deep or whatever he really bailed you out, showing some real athleticism and honesty
smile.gif
He obviously loves it as well, and has been well taught- he is eager but doesn't pull much.
I just loved riding him, i didn't want to get off- when we were discussing on the way home, my friend said that he's obviously got the right attitude, temperament and the movement, but i would have to be willing to really put in hours of schooling to achieve some good dressage for ODEs (let's face it, i'm never going to do pure dressage
smirk.gif
)...and, much as the thought of hours of schooling on the flat would normally not really inspire me (i live to jump
tongue.gif
) i found myself thinking 'i would love to spend hours just exploring what he can do, teaching him and learning with him' which i've never really felt before
smile.gif

And now the bad part: i am now going on holiday for two weeks, so can't do a trial period, hack him out etc until then. we rang her up today as we promised, and she said she understood we had to get to know him and see him do a lot more things before we could even begin to think about buying- and she has two people coming to see him next week..and completely understandably she says that if she does get a good offer for him she will take it
frown.gif

He is only the first one i've tried though (and i was determined not to fall in love with the first one i saw!) and i am going to look at others, but just from that ride, i feel like he's 'the one'- never felt so instantly at ease and happy on a horse, and he gave me a 'feel' i've never had on my other horses
frown.gif

What if he's the one??
confused.gif

(sorry, i've rambled soooo much
blush.gif
)

Ooooh what a tricky situation to be in!

This may be a really silly suggestion but as you feel like he is the one but just need to test him out in a few different situations could you not get your friend to have him on trial for you? She can get to know him a bit more and find out weather he really is as genuine as he sounds.

He does sound like a lovely chap and I will keep my fingers crossed that he doesn't get sold whilst you are away!

I'm sure I am not the only one who will say - If is it meant to be.....

I think you have to be realistic and not expect to be able to have a trial period on a potential purchase. Not many sellers will offer one.

9 months is plenty long enough for the horse to be pretty well established in some basic lateral work - but it can take a while for a new rider to find the right buttons to push.

Don't rush in to anything. Go on holiday, and if he's still available when you come back try him again. If you feel the same about him, you can arrange a vetting.

You can't be slow on a good horse. Why did you go to see him knowing you didn't have time to try him properly before going away.
confused.gif
If he's any good and reasonably priced he'll be long gone and you'll know you've missed out on a good horse you got on with, if he's still there, chances are he's actually not that great anyway.

Do you and your friend know all about conformation and signs of health problems? You can't just go off the ride. although of course its important. I hope you come across something you like as much when you have time to try it properly.

I agree if theres 2 other people going to see him the chances are he will be gone by the tie you get back when i went to see my horse i rang them on the way back and said i would have him to avoid missing out on him if you know he is the one i would just get him and then get your friend to ride him for you when you go away and see what he is like

Sorry but I am going to confuse you even more here!

If you think he is the one, and you will know, and you seem to indicate that he is..

Then go for it!

The seller has already said she'd be fine with a trial period, so that's ok.
Yes- like i said i am definitely going to see some others, with an open mind; apart from anything else, my mum, friend and instructor wouldn't let me rush into anything; they are my 'voices of reason'- i have had a couple of experiences with horses who were really not right for me, so we're determined to do it right this time. In that respect i feel silly for having fallen for the first one i've tried
blush.gif
but i will be realistic. Thanks AmyMay

When are you going to see more horses? Before or after your holiday? I would never buy the first horse I see without at least trying a few others, if only just to confirm that they are 'the one'.

Yeah to be fair i had been to see like 7 horses before i bought my horse so you are proberbly right to go and see other first if hes the one he will still be there. Good luck anyway

Goodness, don't feel like that. If Thumper had been the first horse I'd seen I wouldn't have looked at any others.....

ditto this, i would have missed out on an amazing horse at an amazing price had i waited, i knew before we left she was the one

Yes- my friend has events and breeds her own... and has a whole wealth of experience that i couldn't even begin to contend with
grin.gif
and of course i won't be buying any horse without a vetting anyway.

Very sensible advice from Amymay, i second this

im so pleased for you BUT if hes not here when you get back or you cant find a way of making it possible then its not meant to be hun, there were a couple i fell in love with before Ted but even though i tried they didnt come right, i tried Ted on a whim, a kind of nothing to lose thing. instantly fell in lvoe with him, it was so right, he almost got sold to someone else but nope he was home within 2 days. in my mind, me and Ted was meant to be. you either dont go away and get him and accept a trial may not be possible (a lot of sellers wont do a trial) or you go away and accept the fact there is a very big chance he wont be there. and if he is....it was meant to be

Right, now i've confused myself. I have found myself reading each reply and thinking 'yes, that definitely makes sense' even though they are all very different
grin.gif

Really, i shouldn't have gone to see this horse so soon before going on holiday, as i now haven't got time to make a quick decision; however, when i saw the ad, i wanted to go and see him, not especially convinced he WOULD be the one.
On the one hand i DO want to rush in and leave a deposit etc (can't cancel the holiday clipcloppop
frown.gif
wink.gif
) but i have seen so little of him that that's just not really an option- he could turn out to be a nutter on the roads, or something.
And part of me thinks if he's the one, he'll still be there and it'll be a sign..but my brain says if he's been turned down by the two people, he's got something wrong with him..
I guess I still don't know enough about him to take a gamble as it were- and i haven't seen any others either.
Arg!!

if hes turned down by two people, it doesnt mean theres something wrong with him, it just means they didnt like him and didnt see him how you did. that simple lol x

Merlin was the 1st horse I looked at!!

If you really like the horse, then go back and look at it again, and take someone different with you.
If you can, ask to take it to different arena etc. so see how you get on with it?

Personally, I feel like dressage can always be worked on - when it clicks with a horse it becomes so much easier.

Go see the other horses so you know if he is the "one"
smile.gif

I saw George just before I went on holiday for 2 weeks, as I decided he was the one I explained the situation to the owners and it was agreed that I would pay a 10% deposit and we drew up an agreement that said I would buy him if he passed the vetting (done whilst I was away) and nothing untoward happened to him whilst I was away. This was probably the wrong way to do things but it worked and I didn't loose what turned out to be one in a million!

Aww, good luck
smile.gif
I hope he IS still available when you get back, and turns out just as perfect as you think

3/4 horses I've ever owned have been the first ones I tried at the times when I was looking for a new one! (the 4th one we weren't looking for at all, I had a few lessons on her and we decided to buy her xD) so I wouldn't be put off because I hadn't tried others! Might not be the best way to go about it, but it works for me!
