found this on youtube, poor mare.

Mare has clearly had these before, as the woman says as she walks in,' she's gonna seizure'. It doesn't matter how you speak to someone who is having a seizure, they won't hear you or understand you. You can't soothe an animal or person during or out of a seizure. I do hope they have had this poor horse PTS!!

Poor pony, she is not talking to the horse she is shouting at her screaming daughter that is behind her. If u listen there is a high pitched child in the back ground. Hope the pony is ok. :(

i would be tempted to pts? what if her daughter had led that pony in and she started fitting, noy fair to anyone??

i wouldn t put a video on you tube and leave myself open to all sorts of people making all sorts of comments.

also, dont really like the way the person taking the video are speaking to her as she has the seizure.. hardly a calming tone

I didn't hear anyone speaking to the horse, I heard the woman speaking to a screaming child who was in bits in the back ground - but not the horse....Can pretty much guarantee the horse couldn't give a hoot if she spoke in 12 different languages at that moment TBH.

I've never seen a seizure, so interesting to see and would be able to recognise it in future. I am often surprised to hear how people think these things shouldn't be filmed, unless you're "lucky" enough to see ALL horse conditions first hand - how on earth are you expected to learn without someone sharing their experience with you? Via whatever form.

I hope the mare has been PTS, either her or someone else is going to get seriously hurt.

This. I've seen so many horrible things on youtube (Some I've purposefully found, some I've clicked on thinking it would be funny/nice and been left thinking "Oh god, why?!")
It wasn't pleasant viewing, but they were informative. Such as poor Hicksteads video. That was horrific to watch, but if that ever happened to a horse I was with, I think I may have a better idea about what to expect.
Poor horse, I never like to say this, but I do hope she was PTS :(

Seen this before.

The woman IS shouting at her daughter in the background.

I had a grand mal seizure earlier this year (caused by a sinus infection) I was completely unaware of what was happening. All I knew was that one minute I was sitting in a chair in my mum's house, the next I was being examined by a paramedic. Maybe that is what is happening to this horse. She looks slightly confused when she gets up at the end.

Poor mare, that looked awful :( I'm surprised she didn't break her neck when she put get head through the stable door!

The women was taking to her child who had been leading the mare in but had obviously dived into a stable when the seizure started, quick thinking on her part as she could have gotten really hurt.

We have a cat with epilepsy and this is exactly what she does even the getting up and wandering around sniffing things lie she's trying to work out where she is. She has tablets that stops them but the first time she had one I thought she was dying it was horrible!

My BF had a horse who got epilepsy it was a real danger to the handlers so the horse was PTS poor mare needs to go before someone is hurt I agree WTF is she posting that on the internet for instead of greeting a vet.

I agree with others if that was mine she'd be PTS... I wouldn't even attempt to treat her as that condition is just too dangerous for her and everyone else.

Poor girl. Surprised she never broke her neck getting stuck like that :(

Not much the owner can do but filming?! Not something I'd be doing tbh.

The general rule of thumb with any animal who is having a seizure is be quiet and darken room..... and let them get on with it, her squealing wouldn't have been helping the seizure, if she was worried about the dog getting hurt she should have locked it out. Poor pony was nasty when it had it's head through the railings. I hope they found a reason/medication for it/or pts

For all we know the woman lives in some two-bit outpost in the US where the only vet in 200 miles knows nothing about horse epilepsy, which is extremely uncommon. I didn't have my cat put down just because he fitted like that a few times, and I think it was perfectly fair to post a video asking for information, though clearly what she got was abuse, since comments have been disabled.

But in all fairness cptrayes, your cat couldn't potentially kill you during a seizure.

Watching the video does make me think that the poor pony should be pts but I don't know any more then what is shown on the video, maybe it is being treated by the vet and is on medication to try and control the seizures.

ah right, i thought she was talking to the horse just by the way she was saying "youre in the safest place.. nothing can harm you" etc.

as sad as it is, if she was my horse id have her pts. shes a danger to herself and to others and its a total shame. it cant be fun for her to be having these fits then not having a clue whats gone on when she gets up.

Unfortunately I knew a little mare who had these fits, the owners said it was Epilepsy but I don't think it was. She had one in the field and it was awful as the other ponies started to attack her! She only had them at a certain time of year and if you'd never seen one, you wouldn't have known she suffered from them.

It was particularly scary when myself and her young owner got shut in the stable with her by accident when she started to have another seizure... we had to climb up the partition and sit at the top of the bars until she stopped, it was horrific to watch and sadly she died a few weeks later as she had an underlying heart problem :(

Funnily enough, I watched this video a couple of weeks ago as my mare has epilepsy and I wanted to compare. It was very lucky it didn't break its neck in those bars. Poor animal. I can't believe this has been happening for so long and they don't seem to have tried anything to stop the seizures. Vets in the US are far more open to treating cases than they are here.

Goldenstar and Trix98, do you mind me PM-ing you both about your cases? I collect them (sad person that I am).

I disagree.
I've watched this video before and think its really interesting. I would really thank people for putting informative things like this on YouTube as when you are desperately seeking an answer to something it does help. I think the woman is shouting because she feels frustrated and desperately helpless and its a way of calming herself. And I don't think the horse can hear what she is saying anymore than you would hear someone saying something about you when you are jumping a course of jumps at a show. You have other things to concentrate on.

The horse may be able to be helped with drugs but wouldn't fancy riding it myself in case it went down when you were on board. Like people that have epilepsy they are not aware that they are having a fit, only aware sometimes, that they are going to have one. Its more worrying for those watching than for those having, it you follow.

I had a horse that had cushings when I got him, he fitted. The first time was in the night, we didn't know what the hell happened, he was in a right state the next morning. The second time I was just about to get on him, he dropped to the floor literally just before I put my foot in the stirrup. The vet was phoned and all we could do was stand and wait for him to finish. Once he had we untacked him and he went into another, crashed through a fence, a neighbouring barbed wire fence and ended up wedged beneath a tree in a full drainage ditch. My father stood chest deep in mud and God knows what holding his head out of the water while we waited for the fire brigade to free him. He was PTS, it was too dangerous not to.

Slightly off topic, but in the related videos there's one titled 'Horse has massive seizure!?!?' it's rolling, it's never occurred to me how a non-horsey person would see rolling before. I suppose it must look quite alarming!

Sorry for the late reply, but yes I'd be happy to answer any questions :)
