Fred made the journey from Shropshire to Somerset today and I am now officially a horse owner!!

He had been turned out for a month to let him down from race feed etc. but loaded into the trailer (his first time in a trailer rather than a box I believe!) ok and we set off at 7am. Got to the new yard at about 1130 and unloaded him.....the first thing he did in his nice big new stable was roll and wee! All good!

Was a bit dubious about the long walk past the other horses up to his paddock but he led very well, and had a little trot about before settling down to munch grass.

Had a few issues with diggers next to the yard, very scary, and he spent half an hour calling to his new fence mate after we brought him back in this evening but all in all he has settled much better than I expected.

Big changes for the boy. First things first....getting his feet done as they seem to have been just left when he was turned out prior to me getting him. Lots of cracks and a few chunks missing, front shoes very overdue. Still; no major dramas and the yard has a few good farriers so a small price to pay. Any recommendations for cracked hooves?

Here are some photo's, he's looking abit scruffy and sweaty. Didn't want to stress him out anymore by grooming/bathing/faffing after such a long journey.

Thankyou all for you help and advice over the past month, it's kept me sane whilst waiting for him!

Aww he's lovely , the first few days are always the worst ( for him and you!) settling in and learning the new routine etc , but he's smashing and i wish you all the best with him.
Al & Paddy

Oh and as far as feet are concerned i use effol as a hoof ointment but i also feed equimins biotin plus and it's done wonders for Paddy's feet , my farrier is well impressed ( and that's not normal for him)!!

Aw he's lovely :) re cracked hooves, I'd just get your farrier to tidy them up and get them done regular, they'll repair themselves.
Good luck with him!

Day 2 of Freddies new life!

Thankyou for all your comments. Hope you enjoy some photo's of our day today. He's been here just under two days and I think he is settling well! This is the loving gorgeous boy I remember from the racing yard and why I've broken the bank to buy and home him! The beans on toast were worth it.

We've had no dramas today, even managed a very brief groom before turning out. A bit of bonding involving two deckchairs (he seems to be in love with the deck chairs!), some Crabbies, the OH and lot's of cuddles this evening before bed time.

He is looking very stiff/lame on his left hind. Hoping this is just a knock from travelling/settling in but he seems in good spirits.
