If done properly - do we agree?

My situation -- Im getting a bit stuck of new grid work & combinations to practice when ridden & thought possibly i would add something different for him, until we can get out to practice courses! I will jump once a week as he is only young & dont want to strain him too much!

Also i want to start introducing XCsoon, so he needs to start thinking for himself a bit more, just incase of those sticky situations.

(i just thought to add he is a fairly confident jumper with me on board!)

Obviously i am aware of how to set up the jumping lane etc but just not convinced its a good idea... i cant really say why, perhaps i just have memories of kids chasing their poor little ponies over jump chase-me-charlie style!!

What do you guys think?

I don't see a problem with it as long as its done correctly. I would do it a lot more often but I'm always worried about the horses jumping out of the school

Adding a bit on.... do people think it can only be done in an indoor school?

Would love to do some with mine but not sure of where I can go without paying out loads of money to hire somewhere indoor.... can it be successful in outdoor school?

I personally think that a horse will get itself out of situations much differently when being free schooled as it doesnt have the added weight of a rider that will change its balance or will send different messages through the reins and seat.
I personally dont see the point of it at all and will be interested to see replies that could explain how and why it may help.

I loose jump in an outdoor arena. I had to teach my youngsters for a grading. I have found that it is a useful exercise for youngsters providing its not done too much or too demanding. Its easier to change the grid quickly to keep them thinking. My youngsters have a lovely balanced way of going while loose jumping. they lift the shoulders and really seem to enjoy it. I use "reclaimed" road works and the outside fence to make the lane.

I loose jump mine, and the Sjer I brought her from did aswell. She LOVES it, and it makes her think a little bit, as she has got to work it out herself. I keep things relatively smalll (no more than about 1.05m ) and do simple grids, and low wide oxers to get her to be athletic and use her shoulders. Mine gets loose jumped outdoors, but not all that often as it takes ages to make the jumping lane!!
