Following my post about a week ago, I have now booked Archie's freezemarking, with Freezemark.biz. Due to them being quite far away it has been provisionally booked for 22nd June as they will be reasonably close to my area that day but confirmation will be early next week. I wondered if any of you, prompted by my post, had booked yours yet, or even had it done and whether you could update us on here.

.I will NEVER have any of my horses disfigured with freeze marking.
if they did a small shield type freeze mark on the flank like the Hanoverian bred do then I might consider it

Let's hope your horse never gets stolen then Stateside. I'd sooner my horses were "disfigured" and I had a chance of them being recovered in stolen than not.

Archiesmummy all our horses are already freezemarked. It's one of the very first things we do when we get a new one.

Thanks to all the HHO'ers who gave me feedback and encouragement to prompt my booking. After all the thefts in our area and surrounding it seems a sensible, proactive thing to do. I gave a lot of thought into the branding of my horse and would have preferred not to but weighing up all the information I have been privy to feel I would be very much letting my boy down if I didn't do it. God forbid if he was stolen - my add would read 'Coloured cob stolen' - however would he get recognised? And, due to overwhelming popularity and feedback, it is to be done on his shoulder. Thanks again for your advice.

How is having a few small numbers/letters 'disfiguring'? It's not like they will be loosing a limb!

I have two out of 3 freeze marked. I will get my youngster done soon hopefully. Does any one know what is the youngest age they can be done? (sorry to high jack)

Stateside, you are extremely lucky to live somewhere where you think this unnecessary. Unforunately, horse theft is rife here and after thorough research I feel this is a suitable option for me and my horse. I have opted for a reputable company who have a 100% recovery record so in my opinion, the disfiguration warranted that would aid recovery, in the event of him being stolen, is worth it. Of course, I too would prefer not to brand, it is not a decision I have taken lightly. Thank you for replying to my post with your opinion but in this instance I believe I have made the correct decision and will not be changing it.

Mine are both done too! It’s just not worth the risk not having them done. Never affected my showing or dressage marks as far as I’m aware.

I had mine done within a month of buying her (needed to let her settle first lol).

I have T2RA for her name but the A hasn't come out at all so I need to get them back out again.

I don't think it has disfigured her! It's on the shoulder too as she is a grey.

Mine are also done. the grey (white) also has a microchip given his colouring.

sadly horse theft does occur in the states. those that don't get sold on to another home get to travel to Canada or Mexico for "processing" for foreign supermarkets. Go to a French Carrefoure and in the Cheval section you will see the produite de etats unis. In the last decade have lived in USA and France.

given the choice, i reckon most horse would prefer to be "disfigured".

I want to get Tara microchipped too actually - am planning on getting the vet to do it at her next vaccinations.

Even my cat is microchipped and insured to the hilt - i am very risk averse

I posted last week as I had my grey mare done last Saturday on the shoulder.

It's now starting to scab over, I will get some more piccies tomorrow. My mare was micro-chipped when I bought her but I wanted to "disfigure" her to try and ensure her safety for the future.

My old gelding was already freezemarked when I bought him.

When I booked my girl in I had to wait about 6 weeks until they were in my area, it went really quickly.

After seeing in the Stolen horses section that a mare was stolen locally to me recently I am glad I made my decision to have my girl done.

Our new one will be done as soon as he is settled in and I can get a booking. Our two we already have are already done. I think to call it 'disfiguring' is a very narrow minded view - each to their own but like the others I'd rather get my horse back if stolen, and the chances of that happenning if their ads read
2 bay geldings, one chestnut mare
Rather than having their unique marks....well in my opinion there is no decision to be made!

yep. my connie is as white as snow. i seriously have to wear sun glasses when i groom him in the sun - he is dazzling!

freezemark is done on the shoulder and they kill the hair rather than losing the pigment. I've also had the microchip as a bit concerned how well it will show with the winter coat

I've emailed and await their response as to when can be done (can't remember if it was Freezemark or the other one

). Whichever one it was, they were very helpful

Personally, I can't see what the difference is between the freeze mark and a branding mark, other than one is done cold and one hot, one is alpha/numeric and one is squiggles.

I had mine done a couple of months back. It seemed to stick out like a sore thumb at first but now where she was clipped has blended in with her summer coat, you don't seem to notice it. If you see what I mean.
I ummed and ahhed about getting it done but am really pleased I did now.

I have had every horse I have owned since 1992 done. My current two are also chipped as they are both of the type that are very much desired by certain types of people.

The poster who said they would never disfigure their horse, well I hope you never find yours gone - this is one of the few things that put thieves off and makes it difficult to sell them as anyone who is sensible would ask to check the freezemark matched the owners details.

I would rather take every precaution I could than take a chance with mine as they are precious to me. I also keep them registered with Farmkey as it seems a bit pointless not do keep their records up to date should a query be made of their marks should they go missing.

I still fail to see why people don't do this, but each to their own.

A thought. Do you need the horse's passport in your hand at the time of marking? I ask because I'm having a massive clearout and no idea where they all are...., other than In The Study Somewhere!

Thank you so much for adding your opinions and you certainly made a difference in my decision making.

I would like to throw down the gauntlet to those of you who are 'thinking' about it, you sound like you are up for it so just make the phone call and let us know your appointment is booked.

xx

Domi (Connemara x ) is microchipped, Wisakedjak is freezemarked, he was when I bought him. I didnt get any freezemark paperwork or certificate with him (though I did get his passport). Hes been through lots of homes I think it was lost. Dont even know where to start to find out which company did it!

I'm delighted my story has helped someone make the decision to Freezemark. I book mine as soon as I buy anything new that is not marked, even if they are microchipped. Microchipping at the moment has little use.

Freezemarking does NOT hurt.
If you buy a Freezemarked horse but have no registration for it, simply contact one of the Companies, and register it in your name.
