I want to get my filly freezemarked in the summer (shes a year old in May so June time)

Who is best to use?
How much approx?
Would she need to be sedated, ie sedalin (I dont really want to if it can be avoided!)
And how would you go about clipping the little square of hair off a baby??!! (we do have littl trimmers, would these take enough hair off?

Thanks in advance :D

Ive just been looking at the Farmkey website, i notice in the FAQ they dodge around the question regarding it being painful:

Is freezemarking painful?

It is a humane way of marking a horse permanently to deter theft. Super-chilled markers are placed onto the horses skin. This destroys the hair pigment (i.e. chestnut, bay etc.), so that the hair regrows white, and the unique four digit mark can be seen.We regulary mark horses for the RSPCA, ILPH and the police.

Thats great but.. is it painful or not!?! lol!
Would freezmarking my appy be possible? since theres no patch of white or colour big enough to do an entire mark?
x

I think it may be a little painful as my cob did fidget but nothing I couldn't hold and nothing a polo wouldn't sort out. She was also standing right next to his back leg so I think if it did hurt that much it would of also hurt her!!

Yeah they can mark white horse's, mines mostly white and we talked about this in length. As I want to show him and we talked about marking him on his white bits to hid it, but they don't mark you down for a freezmark. I think it can go on both white and coloured bits in one go, so yeah should be able to mark your horse.

Hope that helps. :)

I used freezemark.biz about a month ago to do my youngster. I had the vet out at the same itme because he is really feisty and we knew he would put up a fight so he was done sedated. I should say this is not normally required!

I thought Farmkey would only freezemark from 18 months upwards? Freezemark (who I would personally use over farmkey any day) will do it from 12 months.
Freezemarking does not hurt, although a few may find it slightly uncomfortable. Sedating is rarely required. They bring their own clippers to clip the area, and will clip regardless of your own clipping.

Yes, freezemarking does hurt, more so on light coloured horses as it has to be held there for longer. How much it hurts, or whether the horse reacts to the pain, comes down to the individual horse.

I found Freezemark.biz the better company and you can have a personalised mark.

Ditto, I find freezemark.biz better, I have 3 of mine done with them, the latest being my 18 month old filly.

She was done on the saddle area and barely even flinched, she had her head in a bucket of food and it stayed there throughout, she couldn't have behaved better!

I think it must hurt them a bit but TBH I don't care, for a few minutes of slight pain I think it is worth it!

Here is my Yearling freezemark, it was done about 4 weeks ago so is not white yet

I believe freezemarking hurts but if it keep thefts away then Im sorry im sacrificing it for the neds. TBH my welsh mare was more petrified of the clippers to clip the area than the mark she just walked in a circle she reared at the clippers lol.
