My mare started having them put on like this about 12 years ago! she had cr ap feet, one was clubbed looking and the other looked totally different! the new farrier I used put them on and said that she needed extra support to the side, they were also set further back than a shoe would be if it had a front clip!! before she had this farrier she was losing shoes every 3 weeks, then once he was doing her she kept them on all the time, in about 10 years she lost 1 shoes!!
When my youngster had his first set of shoes, they had side clips, he then had to have all sorts of remedial shoeing and all of them came with side clips!
I look at the hooves of horses with front clips and they just don't look right any more!
