My 10yo 15.2 kwpn mare, being the pain in the rear end that she is, has deicded to produce a folicle which is 45mm with lots of oedema, has had her injection to make her ovulate, so looks certain to ovulate tomorrow. Unfortunately, this does not give us time to get chilled semen from the stallion we want to use... due to bank holiday... typical!
So, i have taken the gamble to inseminate her using frozen semen from home...
I would take her to our local vets hospital so she can have regular scans which are so vital for frozen semen insemination, but she is totally obsessed with her 4 week old baby, so moving her is not an option as she would go mad and risk hurting herself or him, or loosing feotus in the stress once all the hard work has been done.
Has anyone else had good experiences from inseminating at home? Our vets are being quite doubtful it will work as she will not be under constant watch and scans.

We covered her naturally last year with no drugs or scans, just by seeing if she was in season and accepted the stallion. she was then scanned when she didnt come back into season and had twins, i had one pinched and have ended up with a CRACKING colt this year, so i know she is easy to get into foal (despite only having one ovary)

Any advice or stories of your own much apprechiated.

Thanks, and please send us positive thoughts and cross fingers

Sam :)

Presumably if you're planning on using frozen semen, then you'll be buying it by the dose, am I correct? If you have a NFNF, or a NFFR agreement, then your money wont be waisted, but if you are buying frozen semen in, then the chances of success are reduced, planning it as you are, and I would listen to my vet's advice.

cant they collect today and post or deliver today ready for tomorrow? i know thats what we'd do and have done in this situation

Most AI center's will collect and ship out for you to inseminate tomorrow as well so I would have thought that would be possible as today is a normal day...

thanks for your replies... the problem is that the horse is not based at the stud, he is with a private competition rider and she couldnt get him to stud.
fingers crossed this will work.
:)

We always AI at home. Frozen or chilled. If frozen, vet scans every six hours, regardless of whether that is middle of night or not, he turns up and does what is necessary, it's what I pay him for.
It's perfectly possible, but many vets will want the mare wherever it's easiest for them. I guess
I'm very lucky with my practice, a good repro vet prepared to do what is needed.

I'm assuming the jab you refer to is chorolon. I have to wonder why your vet gave it to her when semen was not on it's way. Without that you may have had the time you needed.

Someone was posting about their business idea a few days ago, which is a courier service by motorbike for semen delivery. I didn't see your post yesterday and don't know if you've got something sorted, but the users name is "Come and go" (brilliant) and I bet they could help you out by getting you a dose of fresh or chilled that you can use straight away

In the early days of AI in this country mares didn't go in to the vets for AI with frozen or at least not often. I remember as a student counting seconds and stirring a jug of warm water and straws of semen. Also if you have it there then you can use as much as you need, so can always put in a dose early if it looks likes she might go to be on the safe side. It is breeding after all everything always happens when you don't want it to. Good luck though I hope she has taken.

Sorry guys and gals,
my posts have been removed as someone reported them as 'advertising' (some people !!!).
As mentioned in all posts it is an ongoing idea, and I have done only ONE actual run, (for my niece at LG Sports horses).

Still looking at making the service a real 'business' though.

Your ideas and thoughts were most welcome.
And to that person who reported my posts....... well done, you must be very proud and a good ambassador for common sense and the UK's unemployed.

Oh :(

You probably could have helped that woman to get her horse in foal too :(

Start a group on FB then we all know where to find you!

How could it be advertising when your not even a proper business yet, oh well! I second the idea of setting yourself up a fb group!
