Hi, my dad has managed to get food for my ponios that was being thrown out but there is nothing wrong with it. Just wondered out of what he has got what is ok to give to them.

Bananas which I know they love
Apples
Carrots
Bread
Turnips
Swede

These are the ones I am not sure about:

? Lettuce iceberg
? Cabbage red and white
? Grapes
? Celery

Thanks is advance :)

hi i would definatly avoid the bread and lettuce, and celery . everything else i would feed but if the horse isnt used to having loads of extras id just give a little at a time:D

I generally try my lad on anything that I would eat raw and he can have a taste of any lunchbox leftovers :) I figure most things in moderation, and hope he's sensible enough that he won't eat anything that is too bad for him...

He likes:
apple
carrot
mango
apricot
assorted dried fruits
strawberries
grapes
digestives
pineapple
cucumber
satsuma

Spat out:
bread
banana
parsnip
swede
turnip
crisps unless ready salted
bacon - he stole someones roll at a show and spat it out looking horrified, but licked the ketchup off his whiskers with great delight

Other people on the yard feed cabbage, sprouts etc (general kitchen peelings). Only thing I've been told to never give them is raw potato.

Only thing to bear in mind is that some fruit is very sugary...prob why they like it!

I definately wouldn't feed bread, our pony many years ago had a severe bout of colic when some neighbours children fed her bread. Mine wouldn't eat celery or lettuce but they eat everything else except potatoes.

Just out of interest - why would you avoid the lettuce and celery? I would have thought that they were fairly harmless being green and mostly water?

Horse I owned in my youth once stole and ate someone's ham sandwich and a hard-boiled egg without coming to any harm. Cast-iron guts presumably.

The only one from your list I would feed, is celery, then only as a treat.
I wouldn't touch the rest.
Put your horse on a decent barefoot diet. Keep away from sugars and cereals.
You are what you eat, if you feed rubbish, that's what you'll get.

I'd be careful about any food that wouldn't form part of a horse's natural diet , if you want optimum health for him. It's easy to think that just because a horse will eat something, that it will be fine for him, whereas sugary treats and most fruit are known to have harmful effects on the gut.If you keep your horse's diet as close to "natural" as possible , you won't go too far wrong ....

there is nothing wrong with it.

In that case I would make a Waldorf salad for myself with this

? Lettuce iceberg
? Cabbage red and white
? Grapes
? Celery

:D:D:D

I would steer away from the lettuce, cabbage and grapes for the horses. My horses are deeply suspicious of alien objects in their feed so there would be lots of snorting over the turnip.

A little of anything they fancy I wouldn't have thought would do any harm. Mine eat bannanas IN the skins with no ill effect (my old boy would eat just the skin! - great at a show when your not near a bin!).

They are like people, some will like some things and others won't, one way to find out!

My boy is laminitic so the only treat he gets is celery. Sometimes he'll eat it other times he point blank refuses. He will never eat the leaves though.

Honestly she is not suggesting a diet of mars bars and crips!!!

OP I would say yes to most except the lettuce, cabbage and potatoe/bread.

only in small quantities.

my horse often has apples, carrots, pears, banana, swede and has sprout tree hung in stable often.

He is the picture of health.... :p

Murphy loves tangerines with the skins on. Once he bites through, stand back as the juice is going to slop everywhere!

No other horse at the stable will touch them in or out of the skins, I always knew he was a bit weird.

Why would you not feed cabbage but are happy to feed sprouts?

I wouldnt feed either. No because they are bad for them, but you will have sooooo much mucking out to do the following moring - think, fibre, think what sprouts do to your guts. No thank you. Been, there, seen it, done it, got the t shirt and I am not doing it again.

I have to be honest and never feed my horses treats, apart from apples or carrots in their feeds. Not because I am anal about it, far from it, I love spoiling my horses. Its just that I have discovered that if you start to feed treats and then stop it for more than one day, you get bitten. I would therefore prefer not to be bitten.

Just the smaller quanties, my boy seems happy picking apart and chewing on a sprout tree but its more for entertainment purposes.
He wouldn't be keen on a whole cabbage (it would go straight through him if he at it all anyway) or just a few leaves. Sprouts are on the whole sweeter and more appetising :) for my fuss pot anyway!

Thank you everyone!! I see we are all different in what we would and what we wouldn't feed. What they are having is being fed in moderation.

Thanks again!

Mine must be weird too, then :D

He also likes tangerine skins on their own. And bananas :)

My shetland gets all the peelings and leaves from our vegetables, so that would be...carrots, parsnips, turnips, swede, cabbage cauliflower lettuce and sprouts, but not potatoes.
The big horses are more fussy, and will possibly only eat the odd cabbage leaf, but obviously loves the carrot peelings.
They will if in the mood eat a banana, never tried them with the skins tho.
Never done any of them any harm, oh they even have the crusts of the bread, if i haven't toasted them for myself. But i am of the older generation which prob accounts for it.

This predilection people have for wanting to feed their horses inappropreate foods is beyond me.

If its not bad enough that feed companies have been taking advantage of horse owners ignorance for years by selling them cheap sugar coated cereals, at premium prices, when cereals and sugar are so bad for horses.

The fact is that most horses can tolerate sugar and cereals up to a certain point. This varies between one horse and another. One horse may come down with a lamanitic attack and another may not.

Every time you put something sugar laden in the bucket like carrots or apples or grapes, you are taking one step closer to a lamanitic attack. People worry about hay being full of sugar and soaking it for days, and then contemplate feeding grapes. How stupid can some folk be. One thing very often, is enough to tip a horse over the edge from being able to cope with the grass, the hard feed and that can be as simple as one apple too many.

For your horses sake don't feed fruit and veg.

This is possibly the worse, most dangerous piece of advice I have seen posted on these forums for a very long time.
